Question about GPS

When I try to turn on my Tom Tom GO710, it tells me to insert the SIM card. This is already in situ, but if I take it out and replace it, it says the same again?

    The device was working fine yesterday, no problems. Now it is showing the SIM card pulling out of the device and a red cross appearing on it?

    OK I'll try what you advise, but can you still tell me how to restore the factory settings, as I think the SIM card might have been dislodged when I attached it to the windscreen?

Press the function button -----F ------- and the menu button together for continuous 1 minute.keep the device/unit on and the sim inserted.turn the unit/device off then turn it on as it turns on press tjhe button together for 1 minute.

Pin idea close but bad, due to pointyness.
use a paperclip to press the RESET button.
this won't junk the gel button you are trying to press.

soft reset, push & you feel a 'click' action of button - press & release

hard reset, push (feel 'click' action) and hold for 20 secs or so

Also, remove card can trigger a soft reset.

Possible battery shot or board defective...

Pls try a reset:

  • the reset button that is at the back by the docking point;
  • Iook closely, there would be a small notch to one side of the docking bay;
  • further below, there wold be an even smaller push button that requires a pin to be pressed (it would be just above the cradle connections).
Additionally/alternately:
  • proceed to the TomTom web site;
  • download start up fix.
  • run the flash.

Hi!
I could use a bit more information.
Is it connected to your car or on a battery or connected to the computer for its updates?
I suggest hooking it up to another power source and see what you get.
here is one thing that may help. Take the SIM card out and have an eraser handy. Not** an Mechanical Pencil erasor but the common pencil or bar one.
Rub the Gold contacts length ways on all exposed area until nice and shiny. Take a soft cloth or a paper napkin and dust the debris off. please do not blow on it as the moisture in your breath will corrode it If you have a can of "Air" from an Electronics store, that would be good too.

Have you every dropped the Tom Tom, as this will cause damage to the contacts that connect with the sim.

Best bet is to try a factory reset, update the firmware, or connect it to the computer to check the sim card activation.

If none of these work then i sugguest taking it to a repairs shop.

Double check the map download date on your TT account. Normally purchased maps are available for one year, at least in the US and Canada anyway.

It sounds like you have tried everything possible, and the disk needs to be formatted (erased.) Normally that is a very last resort before having to send the tomtom in.

To format the memory card, you will need to use disk utility (applications/utilities/disk utility). Erase the disk and use the MS-DOS format option. See instructions on this page:

Please try to reset it after inserting the SIM card.Also check if the SIM is fine and not faulty.

    You can also Go to TomTom web site, download start up fix.
    Run the flash, and that should fix your TomTom start up problems.

Have you tried firmware update for your gps .
If you have not tried it try to update the latest firmware .
By updating firmware your problem can be fixed .

Also have you tried factory reset .

Is a 8gb sd card ok for my tom tom go710


I understand that the largest memory card that can be used in the 710 is only 2gb -
BUT it has to be an SD card not an SDHD card, otherwise it won't work!!

try another sim card first to verify if the problem is not your sim card. if the next sim card is still not recognized, there is a problem with the phone. you may have to bring it to repair shop.

You could try to remove your sim card.
Install battery and turn on phone without sim card.
Use phone without sim card and do some operations.
This will check if you phone is working correctly.
Turn phone off and install sim card.
Made sure sim card is install correctly.
If this does not work, it could be the sim card is bad.

1.check the sim card if it is properly inserted.or try other sim card.
2.did you turn on your wifi?turn it on to have a signal from your network.
3.Is it unlock/openline already?
4.if the above mention is still not working its already a hardware problem.

The animation is telling you to insert a data card, which should have come with the device. If you have already inserted the data card (make sure there isn't a blank in the slot) then the unit is faulty and needs to be returned.

I have a tom tom go 710 and need to know how to reset it, and when i turn it on, the screen shows that I need to install SD card. I am wondering if I need the SD card for it to work properly?


To reset your TomTomGo710 device, do the following:
  1. Check that the battery is charged properly.
    Charge your device for at least 2 hours before trying to turn it on again. Make sure the charging light on your device is on.

  2. Remove the SD card
    If your device uses an SD card, remove it.

  3. Reset your device.
    Use a straightened paper clip, or something similar, to push the reset button for 15 seconds. See the pictures below for where to find the reset button.

  4. Turn your device on.
    Press the On/off button for at least 5 seconds.

  5. Insert the SD card
    If your device uses an SD card, insert the SD card.

tomtom go710 map data is on SD card without it, it will not work.
