Is that "predictive text"? if so: when in a message, press and hold the * key until you see T9 in the top right hand corner that shows Abc etc

SOURCE: turn off predictive texting
While starting a text message, hit the menu key and see if it brings you to a text entry menu ... Select alpha, numeric, word, ... you usually can switch around while writing the message via the menu.

There could be a problem on the other end, in which your friend cellphone. Tell your friend that he has to call his network provider regarding on this problem that he have.
The customer support can verify in which of the data transmission that your friend has a problem.
