Hi jordcraz,

This is something that somewhat simple depending on the other computers OS. If it's XP or above, all you have to do is plug a ethernet cable from the back of the computer and the other side goes to the back of your router. When you plug it in, XP will automatically recongize the port and open a connection to the internet for you. If your router is set to the manufacture's default settings, that would indicate that it's set up as the DHGP server, and will automatically allow XP to get an IP number from it. That's it. Don't go into the XP local area connections and start messing around, that's sure fire way to loss the connection that is always automatic.

Good Luck

Can't connect using usb cable

Try using Ethernet. That is always the recommended way to connect to the modem, and it works almost 100% of the time without having to install additional software or perform any additional configuration. If you must use USB for some reason then you will need to make sure you have the drivers installed properly before connecting the modem to your computer.

My router takes 3 mins to connect to computer

If you have a large network it will take that long.

Also if you are using a Virtual Private Network or a Ad Hoc Network it takes this long.

A Cluster Server can take this long depending on how many Nodes there are.

I am experiencing slow downloads and the pc activity light constantly flashing. I suspect the two issues may be related. Any suggestions on fixes? Thanks.

There are many things that might cause your PC to run slowly or restart at time and then. It could be a fragmented disk; fragmented registry; a virus, Trojan, or spy ware; high CPU and/or utilization due to too many programs running; high disk I/O; or something else.

To check your CPU and memory utilization, run Task Manager. You can start Task Manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL and then clicking on the Task Manager Button. In Task manager, click on the Performance tab and check CPU Usage and PF Usage. PF Usage is an indicator of memory usage. If one or both of these is high, click on the Processes tab, and sort the columns by CPU or Memory to see what processes are consuming the resource. If you are not sure what the process "Image name" is for, Google the name and you should find what the process is for.

If your CPU and memory usage are reasonable, then you may have a different issue. Even if you running anti-virus software, it may be beneficial to scan your PC with another scanner to check for viruses. No anti-virus software is 100% perfect at catching everything. Here are a few good free online virus scanners that you can run to check your PC:

An excellent free utility for overall system maintenance is Advanced System Care Free ( http://download.cnet.com/advanced-systemcare-free/3000-2086_4-10407614 .html ). I use this utility on a regular basis.

You should always run anti-virus software. There are several very good, free, anti-virus products available. One good source to read editor and user reviews, and safely download anti-virus software, is http://download.cnet.com -- search for free antivirus software. In addition to the reviews, you can see how many people are downloading the software, which is another good indicator of how popular it is.

I have used AVG Free ( http://download.cnet.com/avg-anti-virus-free/3000-2239_4-10320142.html ) , and Avast Free ( http://download.cnet.com/avast-free-antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.htm l ). Both are very good, and completely free. At present I am using Avast on all of my home computers.

I have heard good things about Avira AntiVir Free ( http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-22 39_4-10322935.html ), and it has good ratings, but I have not personally tried it.

In addition to Avast or one of the other free anti-virus software packages, I also run Ad-Aware ( http://download.cnet.com/ad-aware-free-internet/3000-8022_4-10045910.h tml ). Ad-Aware is a free anti-malware, anti-spyware package.

Good luck!

I ADDED A ROUTER ASKING FOR WPA ?????? WHERE CAN I LOCATE THIS #

If your router does not have the default password on the back/bottom (usually located on a serial sticker), then the next easiest thing to do is, assuming that you have a patch/straight-through rj45(ethernet) cable, like one that you may have used to connect your modem to your computer, and plug one end into your NIC card, and the other into an ethernet port on your router. After you do this, use your computer's internet browser to get on the router's configuration page. To do this, go to your address bar and type in your router's IP Address, which, if using a linksys, is 192.168.1.1 by default (another way to find it is to go to command prompt on your computer, and type in the command "ipconfig" and looking at the default gateway). After entering the router's IP address, a window should pop up asking for a username and password, which, once again by default, are "admin", "admin", or "admin", "password". This should bring you to the configuration page for the router. From here, look for wireless security, and under that header, you should find your WPA settings and passkey. Change it to your liking, and when finished MAKE SURE TO CLICK SAVE SETTINGS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE OR THEY WILL NOT SAVE!!!

The modem is required if you don't have one built into your pc. The router is optional for going wireless or adding another computer to your network.

Connecting another computer

HI,

Im not sure what model of westell you are using but if you say that it has a USB port then it must be a westell 6100. With this type of modem { 3 ports } w/c are USB port , ethernet port and a phone port. Connecting another computer is technically a no-no for that device. It will create a conflict and the other computer wont work at all vice-versa. Youd experience slow connection too.

I would recommend you to just use 1 PC for this device OR you would consider on purchasing a router for that.A router is a separate device where-in you can connect multiple computers. modem --> router ----> computers { wired and wireless}. Routers are more secured and is very efficient when it comes to home networks.

Hope that helps and if you may have additional questions pls feel free to post it in FIxya.

Good Luck .

Help with home networking

There is one ethernet connection to the modem which supports one computer. I have this device with my ATT Yahoo service.

This simplest however possibly undesirable option would be to take turns using the single connection.

I added a router between the modem and my computers and I can wire up to 4 computers to the router connected to the modem.

WIreless routers (as was mine) often have 4 wired ports for multiple machines connected by wire and can accomodate additional machines wirelessly.

The first set of answers you can probably give me to assist you is the make and model of the two computers you want to connect as well as the name of your internet service provider or even better a link to their help/support web site.

If you decided to connect them with a wire could you place a wire safely (like along a wall to connect both computers)?

Second option is connect wirelessly one or both computers the information already provided.

The answer to the above question will affect the router you choose to purchase to connect the machines.

If necessary there is a means to connect the second machine to the first and the first to the internet without a router however unless you already have the hardware and are willing to have the first machine on for the second to use the internet the cost of parts for this solution will likely be the same as for the router and it is not very flexible if you want to add another machine.

I would be happy to analyze the above alternatives and provide you a recommendation to move forward -- however to do so I need you to add a comment to this request with the information about your computers and your Internet service provider. and whether or not a wire only solution works for you. Look forward to the receiving the information and providing you some options.

I imagine you are connecting up to the DSL service for the first time with a phone company -- the DSL service has a help desk that can lead you through the process.

Whether or not this is the first connection, the computer being attached to the connection needs to assure it is configured to accept a dynamic IP address on the network adapter plugged into the device to enable it to work.

If this is the first time I have been through the setup process myself and the DSL provider's representative did a great job for me, If yours is the same as mine setting up to use a single machine requires activating your circuit and creating and storing the userid and password into the modem to allow you to use the DSL Service. There are some additional steps if you have a router and my provider's agent even walked me through configuring the router to attach to their equipment allowing me to attach multiple computers.

If your provider does not help you setup a router and you have one and want to after the first machine is setup provide me with the website for your service providers help/support site and the make and model of your router and I will try to provide you the steps to connect them.
