Question about D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DI-624 Wireless Router (DI624RE)

1 Answer

Encryption Process? I installed my DI-624 two days ago, but noticed that it is not encrypted. When I go back to 192.68.0.1, I get a message that says: To view this page, you need to log into area 192.68.0.1:80. Then it asks for a name and password and I can't get by this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. artfuld@frontiernet.net

Did you change the username and password? The default user/pass is admin/admin. Have you tried that?

The computer will not be able to pick up the D-link network I have set up if I switch the modem and router off. Even when I leave it running it will sometimes not get picked up.

try changing the encryption type. This sounds like the computer your using does not support the encryption type being used by the router.

1. Go to the setup screen of your router. For a D-Link router, you typically fireup your browser, go to http://192.168.1.1, and type in your username and password, my default username and password is admin, admin.
2. Click on the Wireless link. It will open Wireless settings.
3. There are options to let you set your Encryption Preferences. You can provide an encryption key that will be used by the router and any PC that wants to use the network.
4. select none. (if your wifi now works then you have found your problem and you can try the alternate encryption type, either WPA or WEP)

Step 3 Select Enable next to the WEP radio buttons. For WEP encryption select 64, 128, or 256-bit encryption. For the Key type select HEX. If you have an option for Authentication type, select Shared Key.

Step 4 Select Key 1. Enter a Hex encryption key that you make up. The length of the encryption key will depend on what you selected under WEP Encryption.

  • 64-bit encryption 10 characters
  • 128-bit encryption 26 characters
  • 256-bit encryption 58 characters (available on DI-614+ only)

Are trying to enter the WEP key and it is not allowing any more the 5 characters (please input 64 bit WEP encryption and Five ASCII Characters))

It is recommended to enable encryption on your wireless router before your wireless network adapters. Please establish wireless connectivity before enabling encryption.

Note: Your network will slow down and wireless signal may degrade when enabling encryption due to the added overhead.

Step 1 Log into the web configuration of the router by opening up a web browser and typing in the IP address of the router (192.168.0.1).

    Encryption of Di-624

You can download the manual for this router (revision A1) from here.
Look at page 13 of the manual, which describes how to set up your wireless network.
Note that you only have 128bit encryption, not 256bit!
To see the differences (especially in characters and the number of characters) and to generate a good key, have a look at this page.

    Change from default

I am going to make some assumptions here first is that the hard drive was added to or replaced in your computer by a store or by a friend. Is it possible that the installer altered your network card configuration eliminating the encryption settings required to be set in your computer for your wireless adapter card to connect with the router in your home? If so I would suggest reinstalling encryption in both your wireless router and to your computer for its adapter card as you did initially to get them working. I find it annoying too when service personnel change my computer's settings and do not set them back to their previous settings when they have completed their work.

    I hope this helps.
