Right click on my computer and select the device manager...look down the list to see if you have any exclamation points next to the sound card device...if you see an exclamation you may need to reload the driver for the sound card..you can click on the properties tab for the sound device and there should be a tab to update the driver...try updating the driver...if this dosen;t work..then you may need to pull out the sound card(unless it's on the main board). Look at the sound card to determine what make/model the card is..try going to the website for the manufacturer of the sound card to see if they have an updated driver for your version of your operating system....If all this doesn;t work then your sound card may be bad and need to be replaced...If your sound in built in on the motherboard then there are 2 things you can do...First, go to the BIOS setup to see if the internal sound system can be disabled...if so then you can purchase a separate sound card and install it in a pci slot on the motherboard....Or, if you can not disable the sound, Then you may need to replace the motherboard itself.

What kind of sound card do I need? I can't get any

The dimension 4600 has an integrated sound card, but if that is not working and a driver update does not correct the issue, then any sound card that used a PCI interface will work with that system.

No sounds

perhaps you don't have the sound card installed. check your drivers, control panel > system > hardware > device manager. search the sound card, if you can't find him he must be in the unknown devices. if you have a drive cd use it, otherwise you'll have to gogle you sound card driver.

Computer doesnt recognize sound card

One of two things happened - Either the driver for the sound card became corrupted, or the sound card died. First thing to do is go through the control panel, and the add new hardware wizard, see if Windows detects and installs the card. If it detects the sound card, but can't find the driver, open the computer case, make a note of sound card manufacturer and model number, and use the manufacturer's support site to download and reinstall the drivers. (Alternately, if the card is integrated, or was put in the system by Acer, and if you're not concerned about data loss, many Acer desktops have a System Recovery partition, accessible by restarting and holding Alt. + F10 during post/startup - varies for some models)

If driver detection/reinstallation is unsuccessful, power off the system(Unplug the power cord as well), open the case, move the card to a different slot, restart the system, and try driver detection again.

If the card is STILL not showing up in device manager, its likely toast. You can purchase a decent Sound Blaster 5.1-7.1 sound card for under thirty bucks on Ebay, at WalMart, etc.

Sound card problem

Did you reinstall the sound card physycally on the main board or did you install new drivers?
You need to check the device manager (start-settings-control panel-system-select " hardware" tab at top, then click on device manager)
If you have your sound card listed in its category (sound, video and game controllers) or listed in the "other" category and it has a yellow ! next to it, you must right click on it and hit uninstall. one of those will cause the computer not to even look for the sound card for install because the computer thinks it's already installed , even if its wrong.
so if you see one of these, expand the + to see the device , then right click on it and select uninstall .
then procede to load the new driver. restart
Regards.

I can get you the sound driver or send you to the place of downloads but I need to know which emachines model is it. Is it a latop or a T series desktop and so forth?. You by installing the Operating system removed all drivers and need to install them all like audio, video, ethernet ,and many others usually. If you right click on My computer and select MANAGE and then click on the left under DEVICE MANAGER you can see anything with a yellow exclamation is a missing driver that your computer needs. An easy way if you allready have the ethernet driver and internet access is to to WINDOWS UPDATE but select the CUSTOM UPDATES not the EXPRESS option and then you can check if it finds any hardware drivers or updates , usually windows update is very smart and gets alot of missing drivers you might have missing. Hope my answer gets you closer to a solution. Please Help rate me if I helped you out or not I am new but a very good tech.
