Is it hermetic closed compressor? if it is you do not have change oil.
if it is half hermetic and have freon also not change,
if it is air compressor then change oil after 500 hours, use oil especially for compressors, not recommended to use motor oil.

I have a 10 year old GE Monogram refrig. We noticed a small puddle of oily liquid on floor beneath freezer door. It is accumulating about 1 tsp/day.

certain amount of oil is in the compressor motor casing to stop it burning out
it is under the same pressure as the refrigerant

I would say the oil comes from that casing
you could turn the fridge off at the wall
bring the fridge out to get behind it
and degrease the area to see if the leak is severe

if it is..... needs a fridge technician

not sure
check if cost of replacing the motor compressor unit
on a ten year old ge
might be more that fridge is worth

Why is my refrigerator cutting off for 15-30 monutes?

Compressor is tripping on thermal overload(it's hot!). It is possibly hot from running with a dirty condensor, make sure the condensor is cleaned. Some refrigerators have a big grid type coil on the back and some are located underneath where the compressor is and cooled by a fan motor. If it has a fan motor, the motor may have failed as well. If condensor needs cleaning I suggest taking it outside and washing with hose.

If the refrigerator has a refrigerant leak, it could cause the compressor to overheat for a few reasons as well.

Compressor lock up is another possibility, could be caused by loss of refrigerant( which would cause a lack of oil/ or lack of oil returning from the system back to the compressor. Compressor would have to be changed and leak located or repaired. It usually is cheaper to just buy a new fridge

Motor runs for a few seconds than cuts out. No cooling

The startup capacitor is weak and that makes the overload switch kick in. You can get a 1/4 hp to 1/3 hp 3 in 1 hard start relay to fix that from graingers, or 1stsourceparts. EZ instructions.

Motor not running Refrigerator not cooling

There are three possibilities why the compressor motor is not running. #1. The thermostat switch is not closing to turn the motor on. #2. The compressor motor is bad. #3 The defrost timer is engaged, preventing the compressor motor from starting.

Solution for #1: Locate the thermostat switch behind the console in the refrigerator. It is attached to the freezer temperature adjusting knob. If you jump the switch out, the compressor motor should start. If it does, replace this switch.

Solution for #2: get another refrigerator. It is not worth repairing.

Solution for #3: Turn the freezer temperature switch to the coldest setting. Locate the defrost timer in the console on the ceiling of the refrigerator compartment. Look for position labels like "cool control" and "compressor". Jump between these two wires. The compressor should start. If it does, replace this module.

Clicking sound, compressor will not start. Fan works but no cooling

try replaceing start kit on compressor. can get a universal start kit 3 in 1 at a refrigeration shop. smaller kit hp . instructions on kit and bag it is in. If does not work... compressor bad. make sure condensor fan motor working also. it keeps compressor cool and helps cooling.

Is Refrig Compressor Bad or need another 3n1 Relay?

Good day,
Great pictures, but.......
Your start winding is burned out. Forget buying relays, the compressor is shot.
Did the 3 in 1 cause the problem. Maybe, but no way to test.

The disadvantage of a 3 in 1 is it's overload protector.
One it's designed for 1/4 to 1/3 horsepower motors.
Two, it does not sense the body temperature of the compressor. Bad.
Based on the locked rotor amps of your compressor, it looks like about a 1/5 HP motor. Far to light a compressor to use an overload as in the 3 in 1.

Don't feel bad. From your description of the first event, the compressor was probably going south anyway.

Thank you for using Fixya

It's loud and sounds like the motor but was on it's side and waited 2 1/2 hrs then plugged it in tried to level it? stil been on for 2 hrs should have gone up to temp.?

You should never lay a fridge on it's side. But if it is un-avoidable then you should wait 24 hours before you plug it back in to make sure all the oil makes it's way back into the compressor. Try leaving it unplugged for 24 hours and then plug it back in and see if it starts cooling. If the oil makes it's way into the lines compressor damage could have happened when you plugged it in but also that oil in the lines will cause the fridge to not cool. The oil will not make it back down into the compressor if it is running. Hope that helps.

Condenser fan runs for a short time and then goes off. does this over and over again.

Good day,
If Hp means Hotpoint, then that action is by design, if the compressor tries to start and cannot.
The overload protector that shuts the compressor off is wired in a manner to kill power to the condenser fan motor as well.
Either the start components to the compressor have failed or the compressor itself has seized.
The start components are 1. the start relay, 2. the start capacitor (some models only), and 3. The overload protector.
These are mounted on the side of the body of the compressor, and can be removed and tested.
If the start components check, o.k. then the compressor has locked up.
A VOM meter can be used to test these components if you access to one, and have knowledge on how to use it, or you can take the components to an appliance parts house. They usually will be happy to test them for you.

Just have a local refrigeration store to match the numbers on the top of the compressor. It will go by BTU more than HP. Standard refrigerator uses 800 BTU's while side by sides use 1000 to 1200 BTU's..Sea Breeze
