Is it hermetic closed compressor? if it is you do not have change oil.
if it is half hermetic and have freon also not change,
if it is air compressor then change oil after 500 hours, use oil especially for compressors, not recommended to use motor oil.

What type oil for model 90234 4 HP 10 gallon

The model number is not enough info but assuming it's a run of the mill, Home Depot or Craftsman type electric air compressor, you need to buy compressor pump oil at Wal Mart or an auto parts store. Please don't use Automotive motor oil because that's not going to withstand the heat of your compressor pump and you'll be buying a new compressor because of it. If your compressor has a gasoline, 4 Hp. motor, it needs Mobil 1 synthetic and change it after every 30 hours of operation.

    Hello,
Yes it could be running (turning) hard which will make the motor pull high amps. If you installa new motor make sure to check the amps while running to be sure that the draw is not over the name plate spec. Could also be that you just got a bad motor... believe me it happens more often then you would think...

I am assuming that you have checked the oil in the compressor and that the level is okay...

from what you are describing it sounds like you are missing a couple wires somewhere or you do not know what you are looking for. The pressure switch, low oil switch motor starter coil, and overload relay should be wired in series to provide a control circuit for the motor starter. I would highly advise seeking the help of a certified electrician if you are not experienced in working with these machines. You can not only risk personal injury, but also damage a lot of expensive electrical item's real quick if it is not done correctly.

    Missing plug

On top of the motor. Are you sure it's on top of the motor or could you mean pump? There are two parts to a compressor electric or gas motor and the pump. Although the two are combine in small compressors they are still separate components.

You said it may be related to the oil plug correct?
Most compressors between 1/2 hp to 2hp come in two flavors. The first is oil less the second has an oil reservoir. For the latter the oil plug does double duty as the crankcase breather and the oil fill opening. If the opening where your missing nub was located leads down into the crank case it's most likely the oil cap. If that's the case then you need to replace it with a comparable oil breather cap. It can also be a real mess if you start a compressor without the breather in place.

So is your compressor oil less or oil lubricated type?

If yours is the former, oil less then you will need to include some information (make, model), about the compressor for any additional help.
So please respond back with that. Thanks.

I have craftsmen 7gal 1 hp-looks like very low oil level and no motor starts-just momentarily noise and stops?

1.If it has a low oil level, have it refilled to proper level,
    and restart.
2.If it does not start. Isolate the motor from the
    compressor, by removing the v-belt.
    3. In this manner, we will know where's the trouble.
    4. Put power to the motor, and have it started.
    5. If the motor start, then it is okey. If the motor
just groan and does not start, check the starting
    capacitor, it may need replacement.
    6. Check the compressor if it can be turned (one to
two full turns). If it can turned, then, it is okey.
Otherwise, check the compressor piston rings.
It may need to be replaced.
    7. Reassemble your compressor and replace the
    v-belts.
    8. Then, you can plug in to the nearest power outlet
    and start the compressor.
