Question about Gateway PC Desktops
I have a WD2000BB, Western digital hard drive 200 GB. I have it attached to a USB to IDE cable. Im trying to ''save a friends bacon''. I am fairly certain the HD is still operational. I can't seem to be able to initialise the disk. Also, it is only recognised as a mass storage device. I can't assign a drive letter to it either. I always hear how easy it is to hook up a USB to IDE and retreive data.... Of course Im not finding that to be so. I have trying switching the jumpers, I have it hooked up to a 400w power supply, tested with a power supply tester and its checking put fine. I ve hit every combination in the disk managment utility. Ive tryed Acronis and Get My Data Back, neither ''sees'' the drive. Ive switched the jumpers from CS, to SL, to MSTR. Is there any more steps I can take other than throwing the HD in the trash or telling my friend that it'll cost 800+ from data doctors? Thanks
Aside from what you're trying you can also use ubcdwin4 to create a boot cd which may give you access to the data on your friend's hard drive (with network support for copying the data to another PC), it might be worth a look.
As far as your WD is concerned, if you have the ability to remove the drive from it's external case and plug it into the system via the IDE plug you may have better luck. You may also want to try changing the bios in order to boot from USB device and plug the WD into one of the USB ports.
