Quantum Fireball 1.08Gb Installation Problem

By paulrmc - usenet poster

If your BIOS has an option for LBA, this will allow access to the full
disk.
If not, you have two choices:
1) Install the Ontrack disc manager software that should be on a
diskette that came with your Fireball
2) Buy a new EIDE controller that has a built in BIOS with LBA.

There's a FAQ that explains the problem. Its at
ftp.wi.leidenuniv.nl:/pub/faqs

Hope this helps.

Not exactly.
You may still lose somethimg like 2MB of disk space.

The reason is that the BIOS will use CHS translation, usually
multiplying the head count by 4 while dividing the cylinder count by the
same amount.
Problem is, the REAL number of cylinders may not be divisible by 4.

Have fun,
Alex.

To access the full capacity of the drive, you must have a BIOS that
supports the LBA translation mode for this drive. You are correct in
your setup of the C/H/S parameters, however you have to get an add-on
BIOS to support LBA (eg. the Promise 2300+ controller or the AMI
add-on BIOS card, or a software bootstrapped BIOS).

Then you will find that fdisk recognizes the full capacity of the
drive.

Your CMOS accepts the settings, but it doesn't address all those blocks. Your
CMOS has to address the hard drive differently than CHS, it needs to use LARGE
or LBA mode. If it doesn't support either of these, then you'll need to use
the Ontrack software that came with your drive, which supposedly will address
the drive, and let you use all the space.
