SOURCE: briggs and stratton engine smoking

if your oil level is to high it will do this. i would drain and refill the oil to oem specs slowly as not to overfill so it doesn't blow over the top of the piston.hope this helps

SOURCE: briggs and stratton quatum 5 hp lawn mower engine

More than likely you have a valve that is not seating properly or you have a sheared flywheel key that is throwing the ignition timing off.

17.5 hp briggs and stratton mower - mowing fine - stopped to gas up - will not start back up - back fires a few times while turning motor over

sounds like you may have a broken valve spring. Do a compression test as you crank it. If the valve spring is broken, you will get nearly zero compression, it will turn over very easily and this would explain a couple of backfires.

Was mowing with riding mower was running fine started missing and black smoke coming out of exhaust stopped mower immediatetly oil in carb now and when try cranking it just cranks and cranks not firing

Pull plug and check compression. When cranking see if bottom pulley turns from engine. If compression is below 90 psi it won't start and you have an internal problem. Stopped mower immediately sounds like motor blew. Also check side of motor for cracked block, Good luck.

Briggs and stratton platinum 5.5 hp ohv i/c engine

The carby probably has a block either in the idle, jet or float valve. These are both internal to the carby. To fix this, you will need to pull the carby off the engine and get it serviced by a tradesman. If you feel keen, split the carby apart, then run a very small drill bit (.38-.7mm) through the Jets by hand. Also spray carby cleaner in there and blow out with air blower.

42' Poulan 20 hp-I was mowing & there was a loud pop, mower ideled down & quit. It will turn over but won't start.

Check compression, should be over 90psi to start. And check spark. The loud pop I am going to assume came from the exhaust, which if you lost spark would cause excess gas to ignite. Causes of no spark, bad coil, or defective and or damaged safty swith.

Mower stutters when i turn up to full throttle.

Hi if it is older than 2 years it will need a new diaphram and gasket under carby you will also need to clean out the fuel bowl in the top of the tank this should fix your problem.
