If you have a boot-able cd with windows xp on ...just enter bios , and advans setings...boot sector and select the first boot device ..the cd-dvd drive ...and after press f10 to save satings ..reboot with the cd ...inserted..and follow the instalation ....the problem might be that your boot from cd is disabled on bios settings...be sure you at liest note somewhere all the names of your sistem drivers..so ya might look for them if needed or identify 'em from your drivers cd-es. Good luck !

I think you either didnt understood the concept of boot-ing from cd ...or your cd is not good...cause after I sow again what you wrote .. I dont see what need you have for any of the old windows files....when you reinstall from cd..you just delete ( format the C partition ) ..and go on...move ( save ) all your files in the other partition if you have something to save ...choos boot from cd ...and thats all

Solution 1
Requires some tech skills:

To complete part one, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
  3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  4. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  5. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line: md tmp
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak

I have an hp mini 210-1041nr running win xp and when I start it, the computer tells me Windows\System32\Config\System missing. I tried service pack 3 but it didn't work. Can u please help?

You need to get a Windows XP from someone and follow these instructions:
Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM or \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE

1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4. Enter in the administrator password when requested
5. cd \windows\system32\config
6. Depending on which section was corrupted:
ren software software.bad or ren system system.bad
7. Depending on which section was corrupted
copy \windows\repair\system
copy \windows\repair\software
8. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

If that doesn't work or you can't get into the repair console then With the XP disk you choose to install Windows XP and when you choose to install over the current XP installation you will be given the option to repair the current Windows installation and you won't lose all of your data.

All I am getting on a aspire one net-book is windows\system32\config\system error please help as I tried the alt F10 couldn't get it to work

The first step in recovering from this problem is to boot into the Recovery Console and replace the missing or damaged system file with a backup copy. To do this, you will need an original Windows XP CD, or a recovery CD from your computer's manufacturer, or a set of 6 Windows XP boot disks. If you do not have any of these, please visit our tutorial on creating Windows XP boot disks at www.schrockinnovations.com/makeboot1.php.
Once you have booted from your Windows XP CD or floppy disks, press the letter "R" at the first screen asking you for input. The computer will now ask you "Which Windows installation would you like to log onto." Each profile is represented with a number. Press the number associated with your profile (usually the number 1) and press enter. Now you will be prompted to 'Type in the Administrator Password." Enter your password and press enter (if you do not have a password to log into Windows, simply press enter).
After you enter your password (or simply press enter) you should be at a prompt that reads "C:/windows". Type the commands below to navigate to your Windows/System32/Config directory and replace the appropriate file:
  1. cd system32
  2. cd config
  3. ren system system.old
  4. cd .. (note the space after cd it is important)
  5. cd .. (note the space after cd it is important)
  6. cd repair
  7. copy system c:\windows\system32\config
If you were not able to log into your Windows profile in the recovery console, or if you were not able to navigate to the windows/system32/config directory, this likely means that the directory is gone. We have seen multiple reports of this occurring, and there is no discernible pattern that would indicate what is causing this problem at this time. This directory contains information required by Windows to boot, as well as information about your installed programs and saved passwords. If you currently are receiving the error "Windows/System32/Config/System file missing or corrupt," there is nothing you can do to remedy this problem.

My desktop shut down and is asking me to re install a 32 windows file. What is this and how do I fix it?

Hi, This normally means that a windows file from the system32 folder is missing or corrupt. You will have repair that by using your operating system cd and go to repair when prompted. If this does not work you may have to install a clean copy of your operating system.

\windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt

You can do a refresh of your Windows OS, if you have Windows XP. You need to boot to your XP CD and do a repair. This will only restore the Windows OS files and you will not lose your personal data.

This should help. please rate my response.

Having problems with my compaq Persario 2500

this problem occurs when you try to update drivers in the computer..sometimes windows XP cannot update the driver and that corrupts system.ini file as it has a lot of bad entries..Due to this you will get this error mesage..No its not due to virus.its due to an attempt to change system.ini file

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

That means the System Registry Hive has become corrupted.

There are two ways to get back up and running. The easy way which doesn't always work, and then there is the hard way.

Easy Way --- Note that this doesn't always work.
When you are booting your system, press the F8 key during the start of the bootup sequence, meaning after it does the Power On Self Test.

Once you press the F8 key, you will be taken to a Menu. Select "Boot Using Last Known Good Configuration".

It will now attempt to load Windows XP using a past set of configuration files.

If that doesn't work, there is the next step....the hard way.

Hard Way
Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to good old DOS.

First, we will recover the System Hive.

Now, type in the following commands with pressing Enter after each line.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Be very careful when you are typing in these commands, one wrong move, and you have, broken Windows XP.

Also, change the C in the commands to whatever your Windows XP drive letter is.

Attempt to boot the system, if it doesn't boot, get back into the Recovery Console and do the following commands.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\software C:\windows\tmp\software.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\windows\repair\software C:\windows\system32\config\software
