Firewall Configuration

A firewall is a type of security mechanism used for preventing security threat in both incoming and outgoing computer traffic. It protects your computer system and/or the private network from intrusions.
It acts as a barrier, which checks all the incoming and outgoing information to and from your computer or a network based on the firewall settings. Firewalls can be customized according to the level of security required. It filters the messages based on some conditions, such as the IP address, ports, protocols, domain names etc.
These can be implemented in the hardware, software or sometimes both and scan the entire messages passing through it and veriy whether each block or packet of the message meets the specified security criteria.
Some operating systems like Microsoft Windows offers built-in firewalls, which are by default turned on to block incoming threats from the Internet. You can also look for any third-party software or hardware firewall to replace the default Windows firewall.
Types of firewall
There are various types of firewalls like:
1. Packet filtering firewall
2. Application-level gateways
3. Circuit-level gateways
4. Hybrid firewall
The role of packet filtering firewall is to examine the information available in the header of the message packets. The Application-level gateway firewall works on the application layer of the protocol stack. It works in a more intelligent way as compared to the packet filtering firewall.
Mentioned below are some of the conditions, which help in adding or removing the filters from the firewall:
1. IP address: Every machine connected to Internet has a unique IP address. You can customize the firewall to block any IP address, if it seems to show an uneven or unauthorized attempt or nature.
2. Protocols: You can decide which protocols to be included in your firewall’s filters. Some of the commonly used protocols, which can be included in the firewall are: IP, HTTP, TCP, FTP, SMTP etc.
3. Ports: You can configure the firewall to allow or block any port number.
Similarly, there are various other conditions which can be used to configure the firewall.

A Ways to Fast and Free Security Enhancements

Before you spend a dime on security, there are many precautions you can take that will protect you against the most common threats.

* Check Windows update and office update regularly or with your windows & office CD ready. Windows 2000, XP and Vista users can configure automatic updates. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options.

* Install a personal firewall. Free versions.

* Install a free spyware blocker. Spybot is also paranoid and ruthless in hunting out tracking cookies.

* Block pop-up spam messages in Windows or others system by disabling the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant messaging program). Open Control Panel ] Administrative Tools ] Services and you'll see messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them.

* Use strong passwords and change them periodically. Passwords should have at least seven characters; the letters and numbers and have at least one symbol. A decent example would be f8izkro@l. This will make it much harder for anyone to gain access to your accounts.

* Of your using Outlook or Outlook Express, use the current version or one with the Outlook Security Update numerous vulnerabilities.

* Buy antivirus software and keep it up to date. If you're not willing to pay, try Free Edition. And doublecheck your AV with the free, online-only scanners available.

* If you have a wireless network, turn on the security features: Use MAC filtering, turn off SSID broadcast, and even use WEP with the biggest key you can get. For more, check out our wireless section or see the expanded coverage in Your Unwired World.

* Join a respectable e-mail security list, such as the one found Security Supersite so that you learn about emerging threats quickly and can take proper precautions.

* Be skeptical of things on the Internet. Don't assume that e-mail a particular person is actually from that person. Don't assume that an attachment is what is says it is. Don't give out your password to anyone, even if that person claims to be from "support".

3network mobile dongle wont work

Hi,
Three options:
1). Try another USB port on the PC / Laptop. I have discovered that some USB ports mess up sometimes.
2). Check if you have a firewall software on this computer (some of those that normally pops up with messages at the bottom-right of your screen saying things like 'Allow, Block, etc". If you have one of such, you may want to go into the setting and disable firewall briefly and test your Dongle again. If it now works, then Allow the Dongle in the firewall settings.
3). Uninstall the Dongle. Shutdown and restart your computer. Go to Program files and delete the folder where the program was installed. Then use the CD that came with your Dongle to do an install. Then finally connect your Dongle. Should work.

Skillground error 357

i've tried (for several days now) to download the software, but everytime i click "download & play" nothing happens
(it looks like the 'page' just keeps refreshing it self for several minutes, ending in a "error code 357" message!

I contacted skillground numerous times , and thou they are helpful in their replies.. they keep saying that its my router and/or firewall that prevents the software from downloading.. BUT

even when i disable the router (running the internet cable direct from the "wall plug" into my pc) , and disableing my firewall (Norton) (i have even tried uninstalling the Norton).... its still the same problem

I've allowed cookies... set the internet security to minimum ..disabled the router and Norton firewall, ..removed the skillground 'program' and even tried to create another account ...but its still the same problem ... so i've ran out of idea's

but have you tried checking (in addition to your router, and norton firewalls) the built-in vista firewall?

Error code 80048820

MSN Message error 80048820, unable to signin

Problems:
- While you try to Sign in MSN Messenger you getting an error message with the no. 80048820
- Unable to Sing in

Probably reasons-
- Your system time/date incorrect
- Internet Proxy setting incorrect
- softpub.dll disable/missing
- Firewall does not allow to access, etc.

Solution-

Step#1

- Remove Internet Explorer proxy server settings and check the 'Automatically detect settings'.
- Launch Internet Explorer, click "Tools" and then click Internet Options. From the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab. Click LAN Setting. Uncheck the Use a proxy server for your LAN checkbox. Finally tick/check: 'Automatically detect settings'.

Step#2
- Correct the computer system's Time/Day as current (if required).

Step#3
- Click Start (Button), and then click Run, type regsvr32 softpub.dll click ok.

Step#4
- Turn off the firewall. Check firewall settings such as Norton: "Block access to secure sites". If this cures the problem, make sure that Microsoft's MSN Messenger is allowed full access through your firewall.

Possible Virus

Spyware cause the same effect as general browser pop-ups but they are usually powered by Browser Helper Objects, ActiveX controls which attaches to Internet Explorer and contacts their servers without your knowledge. This not only means waste of internet bandwidth, but your private information may also be sent to someone. You need to treat any outgoing connection without your permission, as a security threat.
Along with your anti-virus software, you need to anti-spyware tools such as Ad-AwareSpybot Search & DestroySpyware Blaster at a bare minimum. You must update the pattern files before scanning just like what you do for your anti-virus software.

  • Use HOSTS file to block unwanted ad servers and sites that are known to spread malware
  • Increase your browser security settings. Visit the following link to learn how to protect the system from parasites.
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
(Site packed with full of security tips, advice to prevent parasites being installed)
  • Use an application-based firewall, such as Zone Alarm, Sygate etc. They alert you whenever an outgoing traffic by a new application is detected. By doing this, you are preventing dialers, Trojans accessing the internet. Give equal importance to the configuration of the firewall. Assume your firewall as the gatekeeper, and only allow programs that you want, to access the internet. You may then test the effectiveness of the Firewall (for inbound protection) using any of these websites. They scan your system for open ports and vulnerabilities and advice you what action to take.
