I can't access McFee protection on my Dell pc. The McAfee icon has disappeared from desk top and the link at the bottom right hand side of screen doesn't work.

The advantage of using McAfee is they have a very good support system. Google 'McAfee support' and take it from there. I have found the live chat with a McAfee to be very good.

Tip

Firewall Configuration

A firewall is a type of security mechanism used for preventing security threat in both incoming and outgoing computer traffic. It protects your computer system and/or the private network from intrusions.
It acts as a barrier, which checks all the incoming and outgoing information to and from your computer or a network based on the firewall settings. Firewalls can be customized according to the level of security required. It filters the messages based on some conditions, such as the IP address, ports, protocols, domain names etc.
These can be implemented in the hardware, software or sometimes both and scan the entire messages passing through it and veriy whether each block or packet of the message meets the specified security criteria.
Some operating systems like Microsoft Windows offers built-in firewalls, which are by default turned on to block incoming threats from the Internet. You can also look for any third-party software or hardware firewall to replace the default Windows firewall.
Types of firewall
There are various types of firewalls like:
1. Packet filtering firewall
2. Application-level gateways
3. Circuit-level gateways
4. Hybrid firewall
The role of packet filtering firewall is to examine the information available in the header of the message packets. The Application-level gateway firewall works on the application layer of the protocol stack. It works in a more intelligent way as compared to the packet filtering firewall.
Mentioned below are some of the conditions, which help in adding or removing the filters from the firewall:
1. IP address: Every machine connected to Internet has a unique IP address. You can customize the firewall to block any IP address, if it seems to show an uneven or unauthorized attempt or nature.
2. Protocols: You can decide which protocols to be included in your firewall’s filters. Some of the commonly used protocols, which can be included in the firewall are: IP, HTTP, TCP, FTP, SMTP etc.
3. Ports: You can configure the firewall to allow or block any port number.
Similarly, there are various other conditions which can be used to configure the firewall.

When I try to download anything I get a message that says my security settings are not allowing this download. I turned of security and still got the same message.

The computer is on alert, a messenger to the user. Several computer features perform alert functionalities. First, the firewalls are feature functions on the computer that prevents any program least recognized as belonging to the system from integration. Alternately said, a firewall on the computer disallows any program installations either achievable with CDs, Disk or DVD media or simple downloadable from networked structure of devices. In the situation that external programs were being introduced by the user, a message alert is displayed either as warning of possible infiltration or requesting permission for progress. Second, the computer security settings usually prevent any unauthorized integration of programs into users default settings. In which instance, the user has to disable the computers security else downloads of program installations would be nonexistent. Third, internet worked computer device usually has security setting for several purposes. First, internet security setting on the computer allows the default user of the computer to gain access to networked device often common with subscriber connections. Once an authorized user is recognized, permission is acquired to navigate the network. Alternately, internet computer securities disallow intrusion programs. For example while on the internet, it is possible to request programs either irrelevant in functionality, harmful ware clogging computers features as default. Finally, internet security make impossible hidden intrusions on the from several device operating under auspices least observable above program encryptions. However, a computer alert performs as reminder to the user that an introduction of programs from an elsewhere location is about to take place. Usually, a popup logo would require authorization approval to continue with accessibility or authorization disapproval for alternate response to be achieved. In the situation of yahoo messenger installation alert would require disabling the computer firewalls if any installation the program may be required. A computer firewall set as enabled would hardly allow installations or downloads unless the feature was set to disabled by the computer user for resuming of program transferability.

I cannot install the latest version of yahoo messenger

Your Windows firewall may be interfering with the connection. You can unplug from the internet, then turn off your firewall, (security center), then install, then turn the firewall back on and reconnect your internet cable.
Or, follow the instructions from Yahoo here and here.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

Norton Firewall Difficlty

I suggest not using norton. Goto www.avast.com and use the Free home-edition. Set your windows firewall back to defaults after norton is uninstalled.

Make sure to have Avast scan every file on your system. You very well maybe infected.

Please do not think norton is all that great because you payed for it. Get Avast.

G'luck

Error code 80048820

MSN Message error 80048820, unable to signin

Problems:
- While you try to Sign in MSN Messenger you getting an error message with the no. 80048820
- Unable to Sing in

Probably reasons-
- Your system time/date incorrect
- Internet Proxy setting incorrect
- softpub.dll disable/missing
- Firewall does not allow to access, etc.

Solution-

Step#1

- Remove Internet Explorer proxy server settings and check the 'Automatically detect settings'.
- Launch Internet Explorer, click "Tools" and then click Internet Options. From the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab. Click LAN Setting. Uncheck the Use a proxy server for your LAN checkbox. Finally tick/check: 'Automatically detect settings'.

Step#2
- Correct the computer system's Time/Day as current (if required).

Step#3
- Click Start (Button), and then click Run, type regsvr32 softpub.dll click ok.

Step#4
- Turn off the firewall. Check firewall settings such as Norton: "Block access to secure sites". If this cures the problem, make sure that Microsoft's MSN Messenger is allowed full access through your firewall.
