Question about Philips 60PP9401 60" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Picture seems to be losing its sharpness and colors bleed

I have a philips 60" rear projection HDTV monitor. it seems to be losing its sharpness and color. I've tried adjusting everything but still does not help. I'd like to try and fix this problem before it gets worse. thanks. I believe I may have the same problem. The figures and objects are shadowed and very heavy read; the picture seems a bit darker as well. Will the coolant kit solve this?

thanks in advance

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directipicture seems to be losing its sharpness and color - 2c07611.pngnvergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

The tv seems to be glowing, especially all the bright colors. Have adjusted brightness, sharpness, color and so forth and nothing seems to fix it. What can I do?

Your problem is the fluid in the 3 picture tubes needs to be replaced. All the older projection sets used this type of cooling for the tubes. After time and usage the fluid becomes contaminated and starts to turn brown and light cannot get through the crud and therefore you wind up with a dull picture. I recommend having a service company do this procedure. It is very detrimental to the printed circuit boards and components if you would spill and on them. Most shops charge around $250.00 to replace the fluid.

most probably your convergence circuit has gone bad.  could be as little as a burned resistor or two to the convergence i.c.'s being bad.  may be time for a tech

60pp9202 picture very dull not as bright when new

This occurs in projections set because they use ethylene glycol to keep the face of the tube cool. After time it becomes cloudy. A service company can replace it, normally costs around $300.00
