Question about Porter Cable 75182 Variable Speed Router Motor

Open Question

Porter cable 7518 not working properly.

The router when turned on, goes up to full speed for about two seconds and then slows down to a very slow spin.  Its very strange.  Ive tried all the variable speeds, and tried using a plugin on a different breaker; still the same result.  any ideas? thanks.

Could be a couple things but I would think that the speed control is bad and for 102.00 I would check the bearings and brushes first to make sure it is spinning freely. If you want to access a breakdown and manual for this go to Dewaltservicenet.com and in the middle of the page type in your model number and download either one.

When the router is at slower speeds, I can stop the motor when pushing wood through a bit. when I back off, the motor starts up again. Is this normal or do I have a problem with the router.

Is it a variable speed? Routers only cut at high speed, wood anyway, if it is variable speed, They must think you will be cutting something soft, I don't know, But they are like a dentist's drill, when they slow down, they don't cut, Keep that thing on high and make some dust, it should not bog down, If it does, check the brushes, if it still does, it has lost it's power and is basically shot. get a new one. Hope this helps.

Hello. Yes it could be the extension cord or the outlet your pluged into or the feed speed of the cut.Try slowing the forward feed speed.

How difficult is it to replace a fan in a 7518

it has to be pressed on and off the armature shaft, Also unless there is a retaining ring or other stop it needs to be set to a certain depth so it wont hit the housing. I would try and see if there is a repair facility that can do this work for you, the cost I would think would be minimal

My 890 series router motor is not always getting up to a high enough rpm. It cuts in and out to a speed so slow that it is unable to use

could be a couple things, the bearings could be seizing up, do you hear a noise or is the motor housing getting hot to the touch. Could be the brushes worn out, unplug tool and remove the brushes and check for discoloration on the armature and brush condition. These are about the only 2 things that could cause it other than a complete electrical failure which I doubt. You can go to Dewaltservicenet.com and type in your model number to download a breakdown for this tool if you intend to repair it yourself.

Router runs slow

I still think that it is the bearings, especially since of the squealing noise which is a symptom of the bearing seizing up and the armature shaft would get hot transferring the heat to the motor housing. Give me the model number and brand and I will find a breakdown and part numbers for you and also if you give me your general location I will try and find someone local to get the parts.
