I'm not sure which model you have but this is good for Riccar upright vacuums. If the hose has good suction but is not picking up well check the suction tube that is down by the brush roll. The suction tube starts by the brush roll and goes to the back of the vacuum where you put the suction hose into. If it has a clog or restriction the vacuum will not pick up properly.
I have a four suggestions. First, check the wand and see if the suction vent is completely closed. If this little vent has the slightest opening, the suction is reduced. cSecond,if that's not the case, you might want to check the brush/roller area. Threads and fibers caught on the brushes can prevent the vacuum from picking up lint. Third, make sure there are no fibers in the wheel of the vacuum head. And fourth, make sure the bag is not full! I often forget to check and back and a full bag is one of the main reasons a vacuum will not pick up items. I hope this helps. Trace the path of the suction into the tank and see if there is anything loose or ingested.
Also, remove the brush and clean as best you can. Perhaps there is something caught in it. Lubricate where it makes sense with some WD40.
Mine was doing this soon after I bought it. I had to cut the strings, and hair off the brush...cleaned the filter (plastic one) and then it seemed to do better. I still have problems with it getting clogged in the tube once in a while...I usually take a broom stick and push it through...I also have a Kirby, I tell ya I am thinking of spending the money to have it fixed because these cheaper ones aren't very good.
