Thanks I will try that but I think I still need to figure out how to change the shutter speed. I have set the camera on the sports setting and when I lightly depress the button to take a picture I can see the shutter speed and it is way too slow. I expected that the sports setting would have defaulted to a fast shutter speed.

For this problem, their is a button to the right of the ok button on your camera. when you click that button a little scale type thing will pop up and it will say exposure compersation. you can press the up and donwn buttons to make the picture your taking darker or also you can pres up to make the picture come out more bright, without using flash. It works for me, hope it works for you too.

When I take pictures outside during the day, they come out too bright.

Welcome to Fixya,

The reason why your pictures so bright when you captured it it just beacuse of the settings. We have different scene mode that you have to chosse when capturing pictures outside or insde doors.

I have a manual here where in page 23, you can find the correct scene mode to select for capturing your pictures. You can choose from Party/indoor, beach/snow, sunset, even a Fireworks show scene mode where you can catch the best shot while watching a fireworks. Just click here.

You will also know more about your camera settings with this manual.

Hope this can help you.

Thank you for using FixYa.

When connected to my macbook, my Nikon Coolpix S55...

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or iPhoto or any other photo cataloging program.

Nikon s710 pictures captured look yellow and darker than usual

Hi,

Can the white balance have been changed accidently?
This will make the pictures look yellow.
So will taking pictures indoors under artificial light.

The White Balance setting is under the shooting menu, try setting it to auto.

Hope this helps.

How to protect pictures so they do not get deleted

Best way is to only delete them 1 by one. Another is to transfer files (pictures) to your computer delete the ones you don't want, format your card and then put the ones you want to keep on your camera back. You can't delete just a few pictures. I carry 3 memory cards. one just has the pictures I want to show people. I load that card from my computer. The other 2 are like great big rolls of film that let me take lots and lots of pictures without the worry of running out of film. I transfer the pictures I want to show people on my camera to the third one and keep the other 2 erased. Most of my pictures are only on my computer and backed up on DVD's.

Picture off video

YES YOU CAN! i have done this myself. it requires software. most video editing programs can do this. photoshop can also be used: it is a little more advanced, but here goes...play the video on your computer at 100%( for best sharpness) pause the video where you want the capture. make sure the "F Lock" is off on your keyboard(to allow print screen to work). while holding down control "Ctrl", press print screen "PrtScn" on your keyboard. watch your curser--it should blink. if it doesnt blink, then the function keys are locked. NEXT open photoshop. I have CS3 so the sequence may vary slightly. Top left menu bar select "File" and scroll down and select "New". a window will open with a "Preset" that should show "Clipboard". Click OK and a blank doc will open. while holding Ctrl, click "V". Control V means paste. this should past the entire view of your monitor with the video paused. you will want to crop it down to your captured image. Hopefully you have a video editing program that will capture a still. I know Pinnacle will do it.

My new Nikon Coolpix S550 will not turn on.

Hey jeanjoy,
I would have it sent out for service. This camera comes with a 1 year parts and labor warranty, and you can bring it to any Best Buy™ store and they can send it out for service. You can also contact the manufacturer and they might be able assist you.

Sincerely,
Allan
