Are you sure its smoke not steam? Most common problem is the heater core leaking. Look for moisture on the floor boards first. If it is wet then you have a heater core problem

No moisture on the fllor board and all fluid levels are normal.
Might be some debris burning on the blower motor resistor. If you pull the resistor, which should be below the dash next to the blower itself, check for burns on it or even a leaf that may have blown through the ducting. It should be a four prong connector if memory serves me right. You could also have a problem with the blower itself
