Can you boot into Safe Mode? Restart your computer. Count to three. Rapidly tap the F8 key on the keyboard. Choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. If you dont see any of these options, chances are the hard drive in the laptop is dead or dying.

Black Screen with White bar is when Windows Vista loading. So it seems there is maybe problem with Windows.
When your Toshiba is starting up - try press F12 to enter Bios, to check if everything is OK.
If you have Vista on CD/DVD - you can try press "C" on keyboard when Toshiba start, to boot from CD/DVD and start to repair your OS, or reinstall it completely.

If you have Windows Installation disk, use to repair Windows.
First go inside BIOS(Setup) with Del or F2 and change under boot options for CD/DVD to boot up first before HDD.
Put the CD in, boot from it and select repair windows once it comes up

Toshiba A105-S101 freezes at start up!

I would first attempt to reinstall the software from the install cd. Your Toshiba support page is recomending a new BIOS upgrade. See below:
