SOURCE: how to replace timing belt

you have 2 sprokets to worry about the top two and crank gear, the crank gear has knocht on it and index on block ( towards back of gear visible from top) place on tdc mark ( top dead center), install the timing belt on this gear first then secure it with a piece of hose or anything that fits in between housing and belt to secure belt from moving from gear) then align the right side sproket on "E" for exhaust cam at top marks on cover and sprocket, then install belt over that sprocket, finally align left side sprocket "I" for intake to the top mark and install belt not too tight or it will make noise just make sure it is firm. now to double check from left to right with you standing in front of vehicle you should have left cam sprocket with "I" for intake to the top and right sproket with "E" for exhaust to the top. having bottom gear on tdc (top dead center mark) and all marks lined up with belt installed and proper tension secured, turn engine over twice and make sure marks meet in the same place then put everything back together. ( recommend you replace both idler and tension pulleys and check water pump, replace if needed or you'll be back.- this procedure goes the same to spectra, sephia, sportage, you will not damage the engine on these vehicles if belt goes out except rio. if timing belt goes out on the rio it will need an engine, if lucky just head. recommended replacement on all is every 60k miles) goo luck tightening the power steering drive belt when you put everything back together, just use a long bar to pry and good leverage. and a second hand comes in handy.

SOURCE: my car battery will discharge

Quick guess without being able to examine the car, I would say shorted positive diode in the alternator. Get the alternator tested. If that's not it, pull all your fuses out. Replace them one by one until you find the circuit which is causing the drain. Make sure it's not something stupid like the glove box light is stuck on!!!

SOURCE: timing belt diagram 1997 kia sportage 4x4

My scanner isnt working, so i hope this can help you out some...On the left Camshaft..you will a stamp I and E...iI is for intake and E is for exhaust..The I should be up at 12 o'clock and the E should be at 4..you will also have marks on the timing plate behind the camshafts to help you line it up right...Now on the Right Camshaft you will have the same marks, but this time you want the E at 12 and the I at 7 o'clock..And the crankshaft should have a little notch on it, where you can line that up at 12 o'clock with the notch imprint that is on the plate for you..You may have to clean those areas, and use a light, so you can see them..I hope this helps you out..Goodluck...

My 2006 kia sportage lost power while driving. It has fuel and spark. The engine cranks but won't turn over. cylinders show no compression and the only trouble code is for crank position sensor.

No compression and no start with a cam sensor code makes me think that you have a broken timing belt. If true, there has been some engine damage. The pistons will hit the valves and cause bent valves/ holes in pistons.

Feul problem

Lots of things could cause a no-start, Hendrik. Is your "Check Engine" light on? If so, please have someone get the OBD error codes from the car's computer.

Does it crank but not fire?

If it doesn't crank, check the battery condition, battery connections, ground connections to frame and engine block, starter solenoid, starter motor.

If it cranks, doublecheck your fuel pump installation. Make sure the new fuel pump is properly connected and properly electrically grounded. Look for a fuel pump fuse. Check for proper fuel pressure at the fuel rail, check the fuel flow rate. Check for spark, check or replace spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires. Check valve timing, replace timing belt or chain if necessary. Check compression.

2002 Kia Sportage will not start. Ruled out the battery, alternater, spark plugs and wires, starter...wondering how to tell if it is the fuel pump or fuel filter.

Unhook the fuel line and turn the key. The spill under the motor will let you know if fuel is flowing. The alternative is to check the timing belt, if it is broke it will never try to start. The timing belt is behing all the belts on the front of mine that is a 4 x 4. The timing marks are above the cam pulleys and on top of the crank. It is a pain to do in the yard but it can be done, I did it.

Changed timing belt on 2001 kia sportage but still runs rough

I would check the connectors on the coil packs, spark plugs and wires and replace them if they at all seem worn or tired. My 2000 sportage ran rough so I replaced the fuel filter, coil packs, spark plugs and wires, cleaned out the IAC valve, TPS, throttle body and intake tube, tightened the screws on the fuel pump access door under the right rear seat and cleaned the ground wire and the contact surface and I added 1 ground wire from the block to the firewall and 1 from the valve cover to the firewall. Your timing is more than likely right where it needs to be but the ignition may be slightly missing from a bad coil pack, dirty or fouled plugs or a bad plug wire.
