Problem with Apple iPhone Smartphone

Dead iPhone?

I had my iPhone at work today and the battery was dying I was not in rush to recharge till lunch. Well I got a red battery icon saying to connect to power, then after hitting the main menu button it just went blank. I got into the car and put it to the charger, no familiar recharge noise nor the green battery icon. I have it home now on the base charger but still nothing is going on...maybe let it charge for 8 hours before I touch the thing again? Or is there something more serious going on?

    • you need to reset your iphone. To do this toggle the switch above the volume back and forth two times, the hold the main button along with the top power button for about six seconds or until you see the apple icon displayed on your screen the main menu will appear shortly thereafter. Oh and if you did any charging during this blackout period it is accounted for when your iPhone comes back to life. Hope that helps :)

    • I had a the same problem and even tried 4 different power sources, and still nothing. I did what you guys said and still nothing. It kept showing the dead red battery symbol. I decided to use a usb cord for my ipod and for some reason after sitting here reading these suggestions it just came back on. It's three in the am and I feel like dancing a jig. thanks so much.

    • Same thing -- it went dead and wouldn't start up again. So glad to find this simple answer. But it's now stuck on the apple logo, the main screen hasn't returned as yet, but I'll leave it charging for now.

    • My iphone just went BLACk screen
and im not sure what to do i already tried the PRess home button with the rest btton, and i tried charging it on my mac laptop, but the itunes wont pop up. and now i put it on charge but its still black screen.

    • By avatarGuest Jan 20, 2009
    • My iPhone suddenly showed the extremily low battery indicator on the main screen, and didn't show up on my computer when I plugged in the usb connector to charge the phone. I had tried holding the reset and home buttons for 10 seconds, but it didn't respond, so I googled for help and this page came up. I tried the solution above and it worked great. Thanks for the help.

    • hey guys thanks for the advise, my gf got a new iphone, was working fine but the battery died on 31st december overnite i put it on charge and had an alarm on for 1st january at 6am, and the alarm went on and would not stop because the screen just died...was pressing all buttons frantically without any results, so i decided to call apple tech support and THEY WERE CLOSED FOR THE HOLIDAYS!!! wow maybe we should stop using all apple products on holidays, and stop buying apple products on holidays too!!  Called AT and T and they said they were helpless too and only apple could solve the problem and they had no authority to do anything nor could they get access to any Apple technician.  And all this time the ALARM WAS RINGING LIKE CRAZY....and then i found you guys on the net!
The trick worked like a charm
Press the top on/off swictch, and press the switch below the touch screen and toggle the button above the volume on and off, while holding the other two ones pressed down, and it took about 10 toggles to start the damn iphone.
I MUST SAY THAT THEY HAVE THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE IN HISTORY!

    • Thanks! This fixed my iPhone, too. I thought I was going to have to buy a new one.

    • By avatarGuest Dec 03, 2008
    • It worked! My iPhone resurrected following your instructions. Kudos! What puzzled me is why did it just went dead for no apparent reason?

    • By avatarGuest Nov 24, 2008
    • omg, i thought my iphone had died completely! Dead and buried, but u saved it. It owes its first born....

    • By avatarGuest Nov 18, 2008
    • I had the same problem, phone was dead nothing working, held down the home button and pressed power button at the same time and kept toggling the button above the volume on and off. Took about 10 goes but it worked.

      Thanks!

    • You rock! It worked and I am so stoked.

    • By avatarGuest Oct 19, 2008
    • nothing is working only sound

    • By avatarGuest Oct 12, 2008
    • Nothing worked. No response other than a slowly flashing Apple icon when the iPhone is in its charging cradle. No meaningful help on the Apple website. Most devices have a physical reset button -- sure would be nice here ... I guess it's time to restore from the PC :-(

    • Hey Vear you made my day! I faced the same problem and was almost in tears since nothing was coming on and voila I followed your tips and my phone is working again!

    • By avatarGuest Jun 03, 2008
    • I've tried the instructions (if I understood them correctly) and it's not working for me. The phone seems to have gone black out of nowhere. My phone is only a month old; it can't be a dead battery already!

    • By avatarredearth74 Mar 27, 2008
    • Yeah - same problem - did a ZiPhone unlock, firmware 1.1.4 - everything was working great the first day. Day two, the backlight stopped working, then the iPhone wouldn't charge... I was able to charge it partly using an old firewire iPod charger, but the iPhone (near the sim card/ camera area) got very hot. It charged to about 60%, then lost its charge very rapidly when unplugged. I took it back to Apple but they wouldn't accept it, as I hadn't activated it through AT&T.... I'm out a lot of money, and I've only had this damn thing working for one day! HELP!

    • By avatarGuest Mar 21, 2008
    • Hi all, I need help!!!! I unlocked my iphone with the firmware jail break. yesterday i was upgrading my phone to version 1.1.1.4 and it downloaded fine and was working fine. today i woke up and decided to put the phone on the base to download some music and right after that i started seeing a message that said i needed to disconnect the phone because there was a power surge in the usb hub on my computer. i disconnected it and after that i tried to plug it into the wall unit and i didnt charge.

Everything was working fine still but i could not charge it. it just wouldnt charge. so i had to use it until the power ran out and now its dead and i cant charge it. each time i plug it in i get nothing. can anyone help!!!!! please i love my iphone and i know that apple wont fix or they will charge me. Helllllllp!.

    • I had the same problem. Was out hiking in the desert for hours, tried sending some pix but no signal, so phone was probably working "overtime" trying to send them. I also had "location finder" on, incase I got lost, which drains battery. Anyway, when I saw a lovely snake, I wanted to take a pict, but iPhone was dead, dead, dead! I tried recharging it in the car when I got back from 4 hours of hiking, but no good. Then when at home found Vear's suggestion, tried it (it had been charging in the car all along, though no screen), and it came one after a few seconds, the Apple icon; a few minutes later it had reset itself, so I could send an email to my wife in Rome to tell her I got home okay. :) What did we do without these smart gadgets back in the Stone Age? Thanks Vears!

I have IPhone 3G and having exact same problem but in case of mine I had to plugin my phone to laptop and started itunes [even though iphone was not detected] and then press and hold power + home button till apple logo appears then it worked !!!

Hope this will help someone.

It is a pity **** like this happens, what could cause something like that..... its beyond me, what a shame.... oh well at least it was simple to reset the phone and fix my problem. Good job Apple :P

    • Ok, I know this is way too late and I don't know if it even works, but this is how I un bricked my iPhone. I got the charger cable and plugged it in. I held the home button, unplugged it for 5 seconds plugged it back in and released the home button. Then it booted up and all was good. I don't remember what blog I found that on. But it worked on my iPhone, my dads iPhone, and even my little brothers iPod. But I can't test it anymore. My iPad has never bricked and my galaxy S phone isn't the same..... It's watt better.

On the itouch 4, you do the same, but just holding the center button and the lock switch, takes about a minute until the iPod sign comes up, but then it just re-boots. :D

My first attempt would be to hard reset it (menu button and on/off together for 5sec) while it's plugged into a charger. If that fails you most likely have a broken dock connector or logic board. I found this iPhone Repair Manual that will show you how to fix the screen, glass, headphone jack and menu button on an Apple iPhone 3G.

It is not a porblem with the softwear, It's simply the Sim card. Just remove it, Restart phone, Put on charger. Problem solved (:

u dont have to reset it. thats a wasted effort unless its frozen. u just have to wait. when its red its VERY low on battery and wont show the apple until the very second it turns green. and when it reaches that point, it WILL turn on by itself. often, if its near dead then it wont show ANY reaction to being into the charger but it is charging and it will later on go to the red battery symbol. Hope this helped :]]

Thank-you, fixed

  • By Author imagejphutch Dec 19, 2008

If you don't even get a charging symbol and you checked that your charger is ok, it's probably just a defective dock connector. Bring it to the apple store to see if you get a replacement through them. If you can't, there are third party iPhone repair services, that will fixed it for cheap. Also, I found an DYI iphone repair guide, so you can do it yourself too, not that difficult. Part is available on ebay.

my phone actually had some charge in it. It all of a sudden went completely blank. No buttons would work. Took the advise posted here...press the power and home button..had to do it for 15 sec....then apple icon came out..one minute later if your phone is already on the charger...you will hear the beap..few sec's after ...you will see the main screen...PERFECT. I didn't even have to reset..it was just like I left it. Thanks.

Had the same red battery icon & the Home+Power Button was still bringing the same screen up after 10+ attempts.

Finally added the 'toggle the sound/vibrate button [you have to stretch a bit but persevere!) & after the 10th constant toggling the bleesed Apple logo returned!!!

It is now siting in it's dock, charging as it should so what I'm saying is don't forget the toggle, ok!

Believe!

THANK YOU VEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have fixed my ipod :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
