Bissell 3920 height adjustment not working

The adjustment knob and the wheel plate are not even touching. Tried looking for "spring" as mentioned in previous blogs, but no spring is there. Does anyone have a schematic of this vacuum?

In addition to the tab that contacts the bottom of the slider, there are 2 protusions on the adjustable wheel plate that move through holes in the housing, but only when the handle is tilted to begin vacuuming. The wheel plate has a spring that forces the tab against the slider. As the handle is moved to the upright position, the protusions move back through the holes, taking the tab away from the slider and the wheel plate locks in its highest position. Therefore, the position of the slider has no effect while the handle is upright and locked. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: height adjustment not adjusting

The height adjustment wont engage unless the handle is in the down position. Not knowing this led me to overturn the hight adjustment knob.

Step on the handle release, pull the handle back and lay the vac on its side. Then you can get the knob and the plate back together again.

BTW, the reason I had this problem is because the front brush slows dramatically when using on carpet, I thought it was set too low, and turned the knob (in a manly fashion, putting it past its limit). Still working on that one. After inspecting the belt, looks like one worn and cracked spot gumming up the works.

It is because the belt is worn or stretched and needs to be replaced. Here are the belts you need and the manual which has instructions:

Still dont know hot to get height adjuster knob to work. tried handle all the way back n lay on side solution that was offered. the plate has a permanent place to sit. hows it possible to bring knob

Hey, not having a working height adjustment can be a bear. Lock the vacuum in the upright position, change the knob to desired setting, and recline the handle for adjustment to occur.

If you are still having difficulty, you may want to have your vacuum inspected by a Qualified Technician at one of our Authorized Service Centers. Here's a quick link to assist you in locating one.

If the brush roller stalls when it comes into contact withthe carpet, it might be that the tensioner spring has broken off. This is adesign flaw in the Eureka4870. The symptoms are: 1) brush spins until it contacts the carpet then itstalls, 2) the brush lever for setting floor/carpet is loose and lacks a firmsetting, 3) vacuum no longer has the feel of being self-propelled on carpet. Itis not very easy to repair and I don't know if a replacement tensioner iscommercially available. To fix it yourself:
  1. Remove the base plate by the 3 Phillips screws.
  2. Remove the brush roller and belt.
  3. Remove the black accordion hose connecting the motor housing to the clear vertical riser on the side of the vacuum. Unscrew it from the riser. Then disconnect the accordion hose from its black connector that screwed into the riser. Then unscrew the Torx T-20 screw that holds the bottom of the hose into the motor base. Then draw the accordion hose out through the underside of the vacuum.
  4. From the underside, remove the 3 Torx T-20 screws that hold the red top cover in place. They are located between the brush roller and the two small height adjustment wheels. The middle screw holds the height adjustment knob. The other two straddle the height adjustment knob.
  5. Turn the vacuum upright and remove the red plastic cover. This is the most difficult step. Use a flat screwdriver to pry it loose in the hole where the accordion hose fed through. On the other side, where the foot operated upright release lever is, you will have to pry the red cover off. I broke the red plastic loop from here. But it still reseats OK.
  6. Still upright, remove the belt tensioner by the 5 Torx T-20 screws, including the one connecting to the slotted arm (it has a wide cylinder under the head). Before removing the piece, note that there appears to be another mounting hole like the four standard mounts. This is the anchor for the spring which applies tension to the tensioner. The other anchor point for the spring has probably broken off, and the spring might be dangling loosely or even missing.
  7. Remove the tensioner unit. Locate the other anchor point, which is probably a broken tab with a hole as the anchor point, broken through from the high tension of the spring. This is the aformentioned design flaw.
  8. Drill a new hole near the broken tab. I drilled two, at right angles to each other. Drill small holes so as to not weaken the remaining plastic. I drilled ~1 mm. Holes should be between the two anchor points so as to not make the spring stretch longer than the original. Plus, a longer anchor point will interfere with the butting of the plastic edge when in the stretched position. If the spring is already lost then use a replacement that is ~1 inch long (total length) with hooks at each end.
  9. Reassemble the tensioner device. Check the operation of the tensioner lever to ensure smooth, firm locking.
  10. Reassemble the red plastic cover (3 screws including the height adjustment knob).
  11. Reassemble the accordion hose, brush roller, belt, and base plate.
It now works as good as it every did. I will next be seeking a replacement tensioner device from Eureka or a shop, since Isuspect this modification may eventually weaken and break. The plastic springanchor points are definitely a poor design by Eureka.

My front wheels fell off how do I fix it. there is a slender long spring and I don't know where it goes

That spring connects to a slot beside the height adjuster knob and a hole in the base to the wheels that fell off.The problem is you can't get the wheels to go back in flush so the height adjustment works. The vacuum will not be close enough to the floor to get any type up suction or brush contact. To change that spring as well as the belt, remove the cover by taking out two screws, one on each side.Force the rller out by prying the right end out of the slot.

Spring connecting height adjustment

There should be a place easily for the wheel assy to fit back in and then if you look you should see 2 small holes in the bottom of the vacuum that it will slip into. If your looking at the vacuum straight they should be on the left side on the bottom.

This is the pdf manual. If you look at page 12 you'll see that the bottom of the machine has been pictured. Between the middle wheels near the brush (where arrows 4 and 2 are) you'll find that the adjuster bar has a sprung mechanism. Now this is easy if you have time! If you take off the or just inspect the bar, check to see that nothing is clogged behind it. If it looks fine, check with your other hand by moving the rotary dial a couple of times and your other hand pressed down on the central bar between the wheels - if you can feel that the bar is moving whilst you turn the rotary dial then it should be working. Sometimes the spring that connects the dial to the bar can loosen and this may well have been the case. If you can unscrew the assembly do it gently as it will pop up to see if the spring has been put in place and then carefully put everything back together.

Some uprights don't allow the height adjuster to adjust whilst in the upright position though but if it doesn't adjust at all then the spring has definately moved.

I have a Miele S1721 Powerhouse upright vacuum. When the belt broke I took it into the shop (because when i tried to replace the belt, the tension was so tight I couldn't get it back together!!). When I...

Hi
The Miele uprights (S170 and upwards) with the Powerhouse title are ALL Panasonic uprights which have been at one time sold in the UK. Therefore the upright may use TWO drive belts which need to be looked at: Take off the sole plate and examine the drive belt which is around the beater bar. Check that this belt is moving easily. Then look at the fly wheel to the motor (usually to the left hand side) and check that the smaller motor belt is moving - it may be broken which is why the beater bar isn't moving and why tension is tight.
Generally NONE of the Miele Powerhouse models have a manual selector for height adjustment - they all use auto adjustment which means no manual selector. The vacuum principle means that general carpet which comes into contact with the brush creates a vacuum anyway between the brush and the floor. If the brush isn't touching the floor then its a possibility dirt or debris has managed to get between the bottom 2 rollers after the beater bar. Check behind the wheels to see that there is nothing there - most auto adjusting Powerhouse models will have a spring behind the wheel and it may have come off.

How to change belt on hoover soft and light supreme

Turn the machine over so you can see the bottom. If you look carefully at the plate that covers the roller, at the back behind the brush opening on either side, there is a clip that is recessed and you can push it with a flat blade screwdriver as you lift the plate up. This will allow you to take the plate off and remove the roller. Put a new belt around the roller pulley and insert the other end of the belt through the opening in the roller housing of the machine and re-install the roller. once it is installed, rotate the roller by hand to make sure that the belt is not pinched. Replace the bottom plate and rotate the roller again. The belt is running between two guards and it is possible to pinch it and damage it. This is why you rotate the roller by hand, to ensure that it is not pinched.
Now, if you look at the back wheels, on the side of the machine where the hood meets the bottom, there is a clip on either side that you can pry on gently and this will release the back portion of the hood. To release the front portion of the hood, there are similar clips located at the back corners of the bottom plate. Basically, you are prying the hood away from the base of the machine and releasing it. Now, turn the machine over, (back on it's wheels) and lift the hood off the machine. The handle of the machine should be down for this. You will see the belt where it comes through the roller housing and you will have to grab it and pull HARD and stretch it around the motor shaft. Once it is attached, rotate the belt and roller by hand to make sure that everything turns easily. Replace the hood and press the sides gently. You should hear and feel the latch/clips snap into place. If your machine has a height adjustment, there will be an adjustment knob that will have come off when the hood was removed. Replace the knob and you are done.

Remove sole plate and beater bar.
Remove control knob by prising between yellow plastic side of knob and casing using wide bladed screwdriver.
There three torx headed screws holding the clotch assembly in place. Two are visible but the third is accessed via a circular access holein the main casing.
When these three screws are removed the clutch assembly can be pulled out. the thinner belt driven by the motor needs easing over the motor shaft.
There are two screws holding the end plate onto the clutch assembly. remove these, twist the end plate and remove. note where the fibre clutch plate and the metal plate fit and replace this belt.
On opposite end prise off spring washer and this assembly comes off the reveal the belt.

Refitting is the reverse.
Have a look on you tube and type in replacing clutch on Dyson DC4 as there is a 10 minute vidio that is quite good!!
Hope this helps!!!!!

Carpet Height Adjusment

In addition to the tab that contacts the bottom of the slider, there are 2 protusions on the adjustable wheel plate that move through holes in the housing, but only when the handle is tilted to begin vacuuming. The wheel plate has a spring that forces the tab against the slider. As the handle is moved to the upright position, the protusions move back through the holes, taking the tab away from the slider and the wheel plate locks in its highest position. Therefore, the position of the slider has no effect while the handle is upright and locked. Hope this helps.
