We left the Xbox 360 on overnight, with a game running. In the morning, after somebody else had turned it off during the night/early morning, we turned it back on and now it wont read any games or DVDs. No red rings. When a disc in inserted it attempts to read it and then just comes up with "open tray" as if nothing is there

This means that your console was not updated with the latest firmware to read Wave 4 games. To update your console, you have to join and sign in to Xbox Live and the system wuill automatically acquire an update to enable wave 4 games to run. Hope this helps.
Yes if your Xbox 360 is not reading your games this is normally nothing to do with the laser, but more to do with the sensors on the back of the DVD drive getting too hot you need to send it in or repair it yourself using a good guide.
are you tring to play just xbox games or are they xbox 360 games because if they are just xbxo games you just need to go to the nearest gamestop and ask them to show you where you can buy a backwards comptiablity disc and the upload the software on to your xbox 360
