Question about Bernina Artista 180

1 Answer

I just got a new computer that doesnt have a serial port, so I bought a usb to serial port so I could plug the computer into my 180. When I tried to send a design to the 180, I get a message that it couldn't find a serial port. How do I set Artista to recognize the usb?  I am running Artista DDP version 4 on Windows XP.

Check the control panel to find the com port number, then change the software to that com port.

How do I connect a 180e serial cable to my usb computer when Artlink and CPS software specify serial port?

I've not successfully managed this ... trouble-is that although you can get USB-to-serial converters, most computers that only have USB ports do not properly 'recognise' COM ports, which is what your Artlink software expects to talk to. I still use an old PC with a 'proper' 9-pin serial port on the back in order to talk to the old Artista range of machines. One of the drawbacks of a 'throwaway' PC industry that expects the rest of the world to continually update everything in response to new interface standards!

I have a 180 and tried to connect to my computer with a serial to USB converter, and downloaded Artlink on my computer. Keeps saying there is no connection to the serial port. Any ideas?

yes you have to make sure you have a com port free and ensure that that is the only usb port you use for that. if you use the usb slot for anything else it always says that the serial port is busy.you have to go into your systems on your computer and find the usb port and it should list the com ports. ou need to find one that is not in use. they will be com port 1. 2. 3. or 4. then you have try each one in turn on your computer to deduct which is slots are actually which number. its a bit of a fiddle but once done label the slot for bernina only.i only have three on mine and so i bought a powered usb 4 port hub and i use that in the other slots so i always have enough usb slots.hope this helps

USB to Serial port cable for Bernina Artista 180

Just happen to be sitting in front a Bernina 180 at this very moment - with the connecting cable attached to a Keyspan USA-19HS Adapter. It is a current adapter available from either Keyspan (www.keyspan.com) or any number of computer retailers - physical or online. Seems to run around $30.00 just about everywhere. Auction sites may have bargain. Worked like a charm on an older XP computer as I was able to test the older software I had due to it having the necessary parallel port the the older dongle. While I am fairly certain this combination would also work on my Windows 7 computer, I am unable to test it as I have not come across a parallel adapter that will work with the older software parallel dongle. I've had other programs/peripherals that utilize usb to serial adapter (on my Windows 7) that have worked fine, so I suspect this would also be the case.

Hope this helps. If you have specific questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Happy stitching,

Usb/serial adapter not working

check the com port of the appliaction, it is based on com1 only then you will need to make changes to the com4 to com1 follow these steps
open device manager
choose com4 and then right click for properties
choose port settings
choose advance
change the port number from 4 to 1
that will be all you can now give it a shot again

Bernina 180 usb to serial cable not working

it's in your computer control panel - you need to assign the com port to the cable - it took me a few tries.

In the long run, I bought the Editor Lite software for $120 on ebay - it comes with a USB dongle - that solved all my issues other than assigning the com port to the serial port. It all works like a charm now.

Pfaff 7570 connection to new XP laptop

In this FAQ list (from PFAFF web) you find 100 times the same question and answer:
H402 My new computer does not have any serial COM ports, so how does it communicate with my Pfaff creative 7570?

You will need to obtain a USB Serial Adapter, which adds a serial port to your computer by plugging it into a USB port. Suitable adapters can be obtained from Belkin [http://www.belkin.com] and Keyspan [http://www.keyspan.com].
The following USB Serial Adapters are known to work with the Pfaff creative 7570:
• Belkin F5U103
• Keyspan USA-19QW
Please note that the Belkin F5U109 is listed as working with the Pfaff creative 2140/2144 (FAQ #H405), but it does not work the Pfaff creative 7570.

It is not true that the 180 is not compatible with new software.
I'm owning a artista 180 from 2002 and just installed the software designer V5+ on a laptop with windows vista.
The only problem was that there was no serial port on the laptop, now I have a new cable with USB ans serial output and the software works very well !!
When you contact Bernina you will get the same answer.

Can't connect my Bernina 170 Embroidery unit to my computer

I just bought a new laptop and upgraded to V.6. Since I have always used a magic box I didn't know how to attach my bernina 170 directly to the laptop. My bernina dealer said that I would first need a serial to usb adapter since my machine is old enough that it doesn't have a usb port on it. Make sure it doesn't have the screws on the serial part because they will not allow you to attach it to the machine. He also said that I may have to make a new com port as most pc laptops only show 4. I did a search of the computer and found how to make a new com port. A little more fiddleing around with the laptop and cables and restarting both then it somehow recognized that I had made a new com port. Voila. It now works. (I am a Mac person). Hope this helps. margaret
