DELETED REGISTRY FILES, SOME PROGRAMS STOPPED WORKING!PLEASE HELP

Hello,
I somehow lost registry files, most of my programs still work, however, some don't and of course "Restore to an earlier point" is one of the programs that doesn't. Should I use a recovery disk (Windows XP) to recover lost registry files or is there another way? I also never received a recovery disk from Toshiba, everything was pre-installed.I called Toshiba and explained my situation, they said I should have received the disk when I purchased my laptop, however,I explained I didn't and they said they would send it to me free of charge. Please help me out if you can.
Thank you

Try using the instructions here from Microsoft .. I know you are able to boot but this will allow you to return your registry files

Lost your Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 2000 / 2003 password?

1) Hope you learn from your mistakes for the next time. Write the password down and put it in a safe place... and remember where you put it. Or better yet, use a password that makes sense to you... Or the best of all, create a Password Reset Disk (details abou this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305)

2) The "brute force" alternative: Re-install Windows from its installation CD/DVD (which I hope you didn't lose too). This will erase all programs and files you have in your computer. You'll need your Product Key (you have this, right). You may want to try to do an "update previous instalation" (which will keep your programs and files), but it may not remove the password at all.

3) Get a password recovery tool (for free, if possible). Many Windows versions (especially XP) do not like if you just 'delete' the password from an account, like some programs can do. If you do this you may lose access to many files and programs. This a security feature embedded in Windows.

a) Ophcrack: This Windows password cracker is by far the best free Windows password recovery tool available. It's fast and easy enough for a first time password cracker with a basic knowledge of Windows.
With Ophcrack, you don't need any access to Windows to be able to recover your lost passwords. Simply visit the site, download the free ISO image, burn it to a CD and boot from the CD. The Ophcrack program starts, locates the Windows user accounts, and proceeds to recover (crack) the passwords - all automatically (access to files and programs will be kept, so you will regain full access to the computer).
In a test on a Windows 7 PC, Ophcrack recovered the 10-character password to an administrator account in 40 seconds. Ophcrack supports Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.
Download Ophcrack from here (choose the correct OS): http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/download.php?type=livecd

b) Offline NT Password & Registry Editor: This one works basically by erasing your Windows password instead of recovering it (ths is where you can lose access to some files and programs). You can then simply log in to your account without entering a password.
Like Ophcrack, you boot to a burned CD created with the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor ISO file.
If you like this "password deleting" strategy then I highly recommend this program. Offline NT Password & Registry Editor works basically the same way as PC Login Now, but this program is free.
I tried Offline NT Password & Registry Editor on a Windows XP PC and it worked immediately without problem. It should work equally well with Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows 2000, and Windows NT.

There are some other utilities out there. I'll post them here as I can.

How do restore my lap to aprevious date

This is how:

Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore: Restore my computer to an earlier time.

This can help if somehow you have mangled the registry... this will not recover deleted files or remove viruses.

Good luck

My compaq mini 110 was infected with THINK POINT VIRUS. i downloaded a malware scanning program which seemingly worked for about a day...with an abundance of pop ups and self restarts. as i researched...

Hello
The re-installation of windows is however recommended, but you can try with follwing procedure to remove Think point Virus:-
1. Restart your computer in SafeMode - After Power-On the computer, just before Windows start, press F8 - From the selections, Select SafeMode
2. End ThinkPoint Process - Press Ctrl+Alt+Del from the keyboard to open Task Manager - Go to process Tab - Select 'hotfix.exe' and click on End Process - Close Task Manager
3. Remove Registry entries that the threat added. You MUST BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST. - Click Start > Run - Type in the field, regedit - Navigate and look for the registry entries mentioned above and delete if necessary
4. Delete malicious files that the threat added: - Base on the given location above, browse and delete the file - If no location is given, click Start>Search> and search for the files. - If cannot be deleted, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to access Task Manager, see if the file is running in the process. If it is, select the file and click End Process. Perform file delete again.
5. Scan computer with Antivirus Program - Update antivirus program - Scan computer and delete all detected threats.
Hope it will helps, if so do rate the solution
Good Luck

The CD Rom of my Acer Aspire 4520 laptop has stopped functioning. The CD Rom icon is missing under ?Computer? as well as device manager. The CD Rom can only be ejected when I just start up my laptop and it...

Hi,

It happens when the Software that is not Windows Vista capable (such as printer software, CD burning software, and games) may have modified the registry to cause the optical drive to not function.

Please follow the steps below:

1.From the Windows Vista default Start menu, point to All Programs, Accessories, and then clickRun.
2.In the Run dialog box, type: Regedit. Click OK.
3.In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4.In the Registry Editor window, locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
5.From the File menu, click Export.
6.In the File name dialog box, type: Savedkey, and then click Save.
7.Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters file, and then from the Edit menu, clickDelete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8.Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters file, and then from the Edit menu, clickDelete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
9.In the Registry Editor window, from the File menu, click Exit.
10.Shut down Windows® and restart the computer.

Thanks and regards,

Computer freezing up running slow VAIO VGN-NS110E

1. stop those unnecessary start-up programs which will affect computer boot time a lot. 2. do a disk defragment or a registry defragment. the former will free up your disk space, and the latter will give a clean registry. 3. notice that just cleaning up registry is not enough. you should fix registry errors.Registry is so important to a computer, so if you are unfamiliar with it ,do not delete anything by yourself, or your computer will collapse. you can go http://www.ccleaner.com to download a registry cleaner. it will help to scan registry. and then go http://www.system-tools-software.com/free-registry-defrag/ to download a totally free registry defrag to clean up your registry thoroughly. Both they are free. 4. remove all junk files and history. 5.fully scan your computer. Virus always cause a computer slow down. At the same time, you should also know that using more than 1 antivirus software is harm to your computer. They will make a big confliction by uncompatible with each other. 6. Add some RAM, which is helpful to computer speed. 7. if all above do not work, you may consider to do a reinstall of Windows. Before you do it , please remember to back up all your important files. Everyone hates slow computer, do something and make it fast again. Good luck to you.

The exact same problem!

ok, if the suite was a legitimate non-virus software, then go to Program Files and find the folder for the PC suite. There should be something like uninstall.exe in the folder.

Antivirus 2009

I see these every day, note: also fixes AV 2008 and many others.

This Malware is known as "Rogue anti-virus" software.

This program will remove it: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5360&file=10&evp=2e0d43eb67e1e71c0b31e62c003599c0
the website that has it also has a really good antispyware program called malwarebytes

www.malwarebytes.org

once you run a full scan in this program run this program:
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
it's another free antispyware. these are both professional grade removal software for free. I remove this stuff about 3 times a day. It seems this outbreak is the largest I've ever seen.

If you want a good protection suite that will keep it out buy a copy of NOD32 (www.nod32-av.com) another you may not have heard of, it will block this and many others before it even gets on your computer.
