Brother printer and Neygear router wireless connection bad.
I have a Brother HL-2170W printer that does not connect with the Netgear router wirelessly. The wired connection is OK. Brother service support tells me the printer is not receiving the IP address from the router. I know this is so because the printer settings page from the printer "say", Failed to Associate and the IP address, and all the other addresses on the settings sheet, are 0.0.0.0. Any suggestions on how to get the 2 to talk to each other?

This is one of the common connectivity issues marring the benefits of having a wireless printer. In this situation your printer will not print when connected wirelessly but would need you to set it up with your system using a USB cable. Try resetting the IP of your system to what is mentioned in the printer and in case there is a router connecting your printer and system then use the IP address of router and put it in your system. This should help you fix this printer issue.
Hi! Your Printer is connected to the (network) router via ethernet cable. Hence, it is a NETWORK PRINTER NOT A WIRELESS DEVICE, no matter your PC is connected to the network wirelessly. So, search for and install the printer as a NETWORK PRINTER. From the printer installation, it should searh and find the printer and susequently install the required drivers. Moreover, you may checkout the followings link for instructions on how to install/ add a network printer. LINK-1, LINK-2
Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required. Hope it helps! Good Luck! CreativeTECH
Should be able to set all computers to default to Brother printer in the preferences section of the printer control panel ( look in 'control panel' of computer). You ca n also download manual from Brother website. Just type make and model + word Manual into search engine, and it should throw up the appropriate link.
This instruction is to setup Brother Laser printer 2170W in windows 7 Turn off Windows Firewall To reset the printer: Turn off the printer. Press and hold the Go Button in front, at the same time turn on the printer from the right side. You will see three lights(Error, Drum, Toner) turn on. Release the Go button. The light is not blue and is off. Now, Press the Go button 7 times. Wait for some seconds. The three lights will turn on and off by themselves. The printer warms up and then stops. Connect the ethernet cable to the wireless router and the printer in the browser type: http://192.168.1.1 It shows the device connected and its ip address. Close the browser and open new browser on your internet browser type in http://(ip address that you see as device) click on "Network configuration" user: admin Password: access click on "configure interface". Change it to "Auto Switching" Click OK You are back in "Network configuration" click on Configure wireless Make sure it is "Infrastructure" and the "channel" is correct. Also "Authentization Method" should be "open system" Choose your encryption method type in your password in "hexadecimal format" and click "submit". If your password is ascii change it to hexadecimal with an online converter Follow the instructions. Wait until it prints the papers. When it tells you to remove the ethernet cable, Do not remove. Wait until printing is done. Turn off the printer and remove the cable. Turn on printer. Now Print the printer status: click on the Go button once to wake up the printer. Now click on the Go button 3 times. Wait! it will print 4 pages. Look at the last page you will see the IP address of the printer. go to your browser and type in http://( new ip address that you see on last page) The last step is again in the "configure wireless" to "configure TCP/IP" choose something like 192.168.1.198 the last 3 digits should be a high number. Close browser. Now put in the CD and install the wireless Driver only. All Done! Turn ON Windows Firewall
When you disconnect an Ethernet cable from the printer, wireless network will be enabled. On the other hand, when the Ethernet cable is connected to the printer, wired network is enabled.
If you press the Go button for approx. 13 seconds,
the network setting page will be printed out. Then release the Go
button, wired network will be switched to wireless network even if the
Ethernet cable is still connected.
You can then verify your network settings and change between wired and wireless setups.
I am assuming that it works whn it is connected directly to your system, as you told that you got your printer replaced. And as you may know that connecting through CAT5 cable is the RECOMEND way..but thats what every1 else tell.
So now, the 1st doubt that comes in my mind is about the OS you are using. The model you are using is compatible with Windows, Mac & Linux.
The 2nd possibility rises have you installed the appropriate driver for the printer you are willing to use and check your wireless settings too.
Now the 3rd possibility is that maybe there is something wrong with your router. Maybe you should make sure that the router is working properly.
Download the updated firmware, drivers and software for you printer from here (select 'ALL' as Type, and then select your OS and language, to see all downloads available in one page): Brother HL-2170W downloads Homepage
The network key mentioned is the security key that you use to connect to your wireless router. It is the key code you use when you connect a computer wirelessly to your router.
If you need assistance getting the network key please message me with the brand and model of your wireless router
