If you see your model in this list comment back and we can move forward with getting your issue resolved.
IBM T40 - most likely running XP(Pro). When you say "it was deleting a bunch of things", I am going to assume that was some kind of security software you had installed (antivirus/antispyware/antimalware). Most likely your logon files were infected. You need to replace userinit.exe. If that doesn't do it, also replace winlogon.exe and csrss.exe. All of these are located in the system32 directory. You can do this a few different ways, one being a bootcd. If you are unsure of any of this, take it to someone who can help. This is easily repaired, so you do not need a reinstall!
If there are no activity lights, or a rhythmic flashing on the drive, then you may simply need a new drive. Small computer stores are usually the best place to go to get a replacement at low costs.
If you are just popping the disc in and waiting for something to happen, then your computer may not be automatically running the programs from the disc. In which case you will need to manually access the drive and run the correct program.
1. see to it that you have set your burning software to write to the disk.
2. try to use it on a cd, if it finishes the job, something is wron with your dvd drive.
3. make sure that the drive you have is really a dvddrive and not a cd drive.
4. upgrade youe burning software.
