Hi,

Not much to go on, but in printer properties, in ports tab, you'll see an option (second last) called 'enable bidirectional support'. Make sure it's ticked.

My problem was with my Canon MP210 after upgrading my 64 bit Toshiba laptop from Vista to Windows 7. Getting that same message during each print attempt. It appears that the driver Vista and Window 7 32 bit machines are the same Normal 0 so when I installed the printer after upgrading it used the same driver I had before in Vista. 64 bit systems seem to need a different driver so thats what these instructions are for. First uninstall the current driver and NOT to do it from the Control Panel since it wouldn't remove everything. Here are the steps I used:
UNINSTALL CURRENT DRIVER

  1. Turn printer off
  2. Select "All Programs' from the Start menu
  3. Select the Canon MP driver you want to remove and then select 'Uninstall' from the menu that appears
  4. Clock OK to confirmation message to completely remove all of the components
  5. Wait until 'Uninstall successfully completed' msg is displayed then click OK

REINSTALL DRIVER
  1. Make sure printer is still powered off
  2. Connect printer cable to computer
  3. Turn printer on and driver installation begins automatically
  4. Follow on screen instructions
  5. Access the download site for the printer: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadIndexAct
  6. Normal 0 Select your printer category, type, and model in the pull down list and click GO
  7. Normal 0 Click on the Drivers and Downloads tab
  8. Normal 0 Click on the exe file in the Drivers box to download the driver file and note where it is saved.
  9. After download is complete double-click on the file to start the installation of the new driver
  10. Follow on screen instruction to complete the install

Hope this helps!

Bidirectional Printing - A means of printing by a computer printer which prints one line from left to right, then the following line from right to left. Such printing is faster than printing in one direction only, as there is no need to wait for the carriage or other imaging mechanism to return to the left margin before starting a line.
how to enable bi-directional printing.here's how:
  1. -click on start
  2. -click on printers and faxes (control panel->printers and faxes)
  3. -right-click on Dell Photo All in One Printer 964 All-In-One icon
  4. - click on properties
  5. -click on ports tab
  6. -down at the bottom there's a small box before bi-directional support
  7. -tick the box to enable it then click apply,ok
  8. -try printing again

note: in vista , printers and faxes is printers.in win 7 ,it's devices and printers.
and properties in win 7 is printer properties

Ok, I presume you are using a parallel printer, what you have to do, is go into the BIOS, SETUP, and find the Printer Port, LPT1, and set the port to bi-directional, or SPP, now save, and reboot. Now reinstall again, and it should work. ( It may just work anyway, after reboot, that may be worth a try first)

Last week I installed Windows07 and now my Lexmark printer series 3400 will not print. I keep getting this message: Please turn on Enable Bidirectional Communication setting in tne properties dialog. ...

go to your "printers and faxes" screen. In windows 7, it may just be called printers. You should see your printer listed there. right click on the printer and choose properties. At the top of the next window, there will be several tabs. click on ports. you should see a box that says Enable Bidirectional Support. put a check in that box. If that does not solve it, then contact lexmark about a Windows 7 driver.

If you have an XP OS, click START Menu then click "Printers and Faxes". A window will open with a list of printers installed in your computer. Right Click the printer icon for your 8300 printer then select properties. Go to "Ports" Tab, you will see the check box for "Enable bidirectional support".
