You have to first find the compartments for the batteries on both the mouse and keyboard. Most likely they will be on the bottom of each device and only held shut by a latch. Sometimes on mice there is a button that you will have to push in order to have the compartment open up.

For some cordless mice or trackballs, there is a slot for the battery
door on the bottom of the mouse. Between the slot and the outside edge
of the door is a thin strip of plastic. If you compress this thin strip
of plastic towards the slot, the catch on the door will release and the
door should open.
On other mice, the battery door is on the top of the mouse. Simply
slide the top of the mouse cover down and lift the door up. There
should be an etched diagram on the door indicating which direction to
slide the door.
Once you have opened the battery door, remove the old batteries and
dispose of them according to your local waste disposal regulations.
Then insert the new batteries into the battery compartment using the
diagram in the compartment as a guide. When you have finished inserting
the batteries, replace the battery door.
The battery compartment depends upon the model of your mouse. But most of the mice have a battery compartment on the bottom. You just need to slide it down and it will open. Please refer the image for further help.

On my Logitech wireless mouse, the battery cover is on top.
Hold the front (switch and roller ball section) in your left hand then put your thumb on the Logitech symbol/name on the top cover and move/slide the cover to the right. The back section of the mouse cover top should slide off exposing the battery compartment.
The battery cover release is located on the bottom of the mouse near the end. Push the button and the top will pop off so you can have access to the battery. When finished replaceing the battery just push the cover back on.
