D300 shutter only closes at about 1/20 sec

New d300 just returned to me from nikon service for no meter or auto focus repair which cost 200.00 to repair cause I dont have reciept since it was a gift fo rchristmas now shutter only closes at about 1/20th sec
no mater what setting or exposure is used today is the 2/21/09 and it was returned to me on 2/16/09. Nikon states their repair could not effect this but it worked fine before they worked on autofocus and meter

Check and download the new firmware from Nikon Support web site. There has been recent update to the D300 firmware and there are two files, the update is a bit tricky because D300 only sees one update file at a time, so even you put both updated firmware files on the memory card or using USB, it only updates the one that is most recently dated/timed. Apply the update once, examine which file was updated, then remove the file that has aleady updated, and then run the update on the D300 again, that should update both firmware files and hopefully fix any corruption in the firmware. Also, your D300 should send to Nikon for annual tune-up and clean, even it has a self-clean mode, but, that is only for the sensor. If you use the D300 shutter beyond what the product life was spec for, then you need to replace it. But, fine your local Nikon dealer (been in the business at the least 10 years) and check with them on tune-up and clean the D300 before you decide to spend more money to replace it.

Does anyone knows how a Vivitar 75-260mm lens will works on nikon d3000?

Vivitar makes lenses with a variety of mounts. Assuming the lens in question has a Nikon mount then it will fit perfectly well on a D3000. If the lens has a Canon mount, for example, then it will not fit at all.The lens is a manual focus lens, so autofocus will not work. You'll have to focus by yourself. The lens also lacks the electronics to communicate with the camera. You will have to shoot in the Manual exposure mode, setting the shutter speed and aperture yourself, without any help from the camera's light meter.

Shutter frame rate drops to about 1 per sec on CH with MB D10 while using any auto focus lens. 14-24,24-70 or 70-200 and an older 20mm auto focus. With no lens or a manual focus, very old 55mm Micro, lens...

Wow, that's weird. Does it do it with the auto-focus switch on the body turned to manual? I shoot a D300 and know pretty much everything about it there is to know and the D700 is basically the same camera with a full frame sensor. The only things I know of that drop CH frame rate are shooting in 16-bit raw and it shouldn't kill it like that, using full-auto with tracking will also cause a lag in auto-focus but that still doesn't seem right here. If it only does it with the auto focus on then it may have trash on the AF screen in the camera and needs to be cleaned. Try setting the body switch to manual focus, remove the grip and shoot jpeg and see if it still happens. If it does, reset the menu settings and try again. If it still does it than you probably need to give it a trip to Nikon. If it quits than start putting things back one at a time until you figure out what is doing it.
Somebody told me that Nikon will clean the pro cameras for free once a year while under warranty, I haven't looked into it yet to make sure.

Nikon D300 When I depress the shutter half way or fully on my D300 the frame counter reads r27 and the lens (any previously compatible Nikkor lens) will not auto focus. The camera is not set in burst mode...

Only reason the lens will not auto focus when you depress the shutter half way is due to either lens AF switch is set to Manual OR camera body's focus system is on M. There is 3 way toggle switch below the synch port around the lens mount. It should be set to C or S in order for auto focus to work. If all the settings are correct and even "AF-ON", next to rear dial doesn't activate auto focus then the issue maybe in the setting or the body itself. As for the buffer reading r27, I think mine displays r## regardless of burst/continuous mode.

Back focus

That's not likely to be the camera but the lens. You can actually set a focussing pre-set for each lens you use on the D300. See your manual for more info.

Nikon D300 camera body shutter doesn't always work

Perhaps it is a focusing problem- try it on manual focus setting to see if the problem still persists...
