This unit does not use the pump to generate steam, so if the pump is bad (motor works but the pump it drives does not transfer water) you will get steam but no water through the head to the portafilter.

The unit is not user serviceable and at $68 to buy a new one, it is for the most part, disposable.

The pumps on this unit do not like to be run dry as they rely on water as a lubricant. Without water in the reservoir, the pump may fail in a short running time.

Hamilton beach brewstation will not brew

Can you define will not brew? Do you mean no water transfers from the holding tank to the brew carafe? Does coffee not heat up?

How to open a Hamilton Beach 40729 Espresso machine

Easy to open. It is servicable if you have enough ingenuity and can find some generic parts to fit, but certainly not designed with servicability in mind -- the thing was obviously build as a "throw away". There is plenty of space in there for generic parts, but keep safety in mind since you are dealing with electrical parts that get hot and operate under pressure!

First, you need to remove the little plug caps that cover the two screws under the door for the scoop / emergency tamper (sorry, but IMHO a more substantial tamper is a requirement!). I found that the only sane way to remove these caps is with a drill. Carefully drill into the caps. The drill bit will catch, and you can pull the plug right out.

Next you need to deal with the odd screws. They are triangle, so even if you are a serious electronics guy like myself you are probably not going to have that screw bit. No problem though, use a very small flathead screwdriver that fits as closely in one side of the triangle as possible. It will easily remove the screw (and reinsert when you are done)

Once the screws are out, gently pry the top off as indicated by john. The plastic top should have two catches in the front near the edges, and two catches on the sides about mid-way back.

Hamilton Beach Brew Station

My brewStation 47214 stopped pumping water today, even though the warming element continued to get hot. A half dozen screws later I discovered a second heating element inside the coffee maker. The internal element is what heats the water and forces it into the basket. This element was burned out, religating my brewstation to the garbage. Probably last 3+ years.

I purchased a used unit. The unit does not put out water to brew the coffee. The pump runs, but nothing comes out. Does the pump **** the water out of the reservoir? If not, there is a valve the stops...

No valve should be a part of this machine, other than a back-flow that works automatically when you insert the water reservoir.

The pump may have failed or you may have a kink in the line.

This model is not intended to be serviced, it is more of a disposable unit. You can however pry the top off of the unit to check the lines for kinks.

Hamilton Beach Espresso Machine

I have had similar issues with my 40729.
Assuming that when you turn on the steam switch, the steam light goes on and then off when up to temp:
I have resolved this by filling my steaming pitcher with boiling water, remove the end-cap from the frothing wand and soak the end of the steam pipe in the hot water for several minutes. Then fire up the steam and blow it out. if the obstruction is more serious, then you may need to unplug the machine and run a thin and stiff wire ( like a guitar string ) up through the wand to break up the clog.

This unit uses one heater for both the extraction and the steam, so if you are getting extraction then the heater is good. You may also have either:
  • a bad needle valve in the steam knob on the right.
  • a bad thermostat that regulates the heater temp when you turn on the steam switch.

No steam!

Ran into the same problem on mine just after using the steam, so it definetely wasn't clogged... hope this helps.

Just try running the expresso maker through a full cycle and then try the steam again. Not sure if the machine air locked or something, but the expresso cycle appeared to get the water flowing again and then it had no trouble producing steam.

Hope it works.
