It seems perfectly fine. The lens lacks the circuitry to work with the meter on the camera, and thus must be used in Manual mode. The meter does not work, either, with this lens.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Auto focus not working could you tell me if it is the lens or the camera that is most likely to be broken.

hi there,

what kind of lens do you use? D40 only support AF-S type to run the autofocus properly

have you switched the focus selector on the lens to A/M mode?
if you have but the autofocus is still not working, i assume that the lens-motor has broken

thanks

My Nikon D40 can only be used in MANUAL mode. I was able to take photos using MANULA mode but for all other modes it says: "lens not attached" even if the lens is properly attached.

What lens are you using ?
For all functions to work you will need a cpu lens - ie; a hsm or afs lens, these are lenses with built in motors.

Also check the switch on the side of the lens is switched to (A)

Dropped my camera lens seems to be stuck

Contact Nikon USA (if you're in the US) and ship them the camera and attached lens. This will cost, which they will estimate up-front, but it is the absolutely best solution to the problem. Anything else is a hack job!

Take the lens off and continue pressing the shutter untill it doesn't react anymore, you should then have a normal menu without the error message.Put your lens on and you're all sorted.Cheaper and less hassle than sending it to Nikon.
