This is what would be known as a layer change. It is a period where the player
refocuses the laser to a second layer on an RSDL (Reverse Spiral Dual Layer)
DVD disc. Some players can have pauses up to two seconds while others will not
freeze at all. The average layer switch time is about one second.

As for a good brand, both are pretty decent. For best picture, however, you
may be better suited to the Toshiba, especially if the player will be used with
high performance video display equipment.

Sony players do have a problem with chroma upsampling. I have a Sony and I
don't notice it, but I am only using it on a midline 27 inch TV without
progressive scan capabilities. - Reinhart

If it happens, it should only happen ONCE in the middle of the movie.
It's called a layer change, and the freeze occurs when the laser is
retracking or refocusing to read the next DVD layer. A well-mastered DVD
will hide this pause in a fade-to-black.

Menu loading times vary from player to player -- mine, being one of the
first generation RCA players, is quite slow while my friend's recent model
Hitachi is almost instant.

That's exactly the same model I bought!

Is it normal for all DVD players to freeze occassionally during movie
playback to load the next scene (on some DVDs)? Also, is it normal for
loading periods between menus, etc? Sorry, I am new to all this.

Thanks for any help. And thanks to the people that have replied to my
original message so far. Much appreciated. :)

Hi,
Well if I were you I would sur around a little and check out which one has
the most probable firmware uppgrades.
I have a Toshiba laptop, state of the art, brand new here in Japan. But the
fucker can't uppgrade it's firmware. Hence not able to to get rid of the
region coding.
