This is what would be known as a layer change. It is a period where the player
refocuses the laser to a second layer on an RSDL (Reverse Spiral Dual Layer)
DVD disc. Some players can have pauses up to two seconds while others will not
freeze at all. The average layer switch time is about one second.
As for a good brand, both are pretty decent. For best picture, however, you
may be better suited to the Toshiba, especially if the player will be used with
high performance video display equipment.
Sony players do have a problem with chroma upsampling. I have a Sony and I
don't notice it, but I am only using it on a midline 27 inch TV without
progressive scan capabilities. - Reinhart
