Question about Office Depot Ativa DQ60M Shredder

1 Answer

I HAVE A MODEL SPL-1506X PAPER SHREDDER, YOU HEAR A CLICK WHEN PAPER IS INSERTED, THEN OVERLOAD LITE COMES ON AND SHREDDER WILL ONLY RUN IN REVERSE. BLADES ACTUALLY RUN IN REVERSE REGARDLESS OF SWITCH LOCATION. ONE OF THE SENSOR LITES IN PAPER SLOT IS BLACK OR DARK COLOR AND ONE OF THE LITES IS CLEAR. COULD THE SENSOR BE BURNED OUT?

Sometimes, all it takes is the insertion of one piece of paper to render the unit inoperable(overload/overheat). Othertimes, but rarely, the unit will shred continuously, providing there is no break in the feeding of paper. The recommended service center stated that it will cost as much to repair as it will to replace. If you can find the sensor, and are able to replace it yorself, it is probably worth the try.

We have the same problem. When we put paper in, the shredder starts to operator and shreds about one third of the piece of paper and stops with an overload/bin full light. The shredder will run in reverse with no problem. Only on very rare occasions will it shred paper without stopping. I do recall that I oiled the cutters with the recommended oil just before this problem began occurring. We have owned the shredder for not quite three years and we only use it a few times per week and never put in more the five or six sheets of paper in at one time.

When I put a piece of paper in the shredder, the instant it tries to fire up the overload light comes on and it stops. I coax it to run by putting the paper back in and pulling it immediately out for an instant, and as the overload light fades out I then put the paper immediately back in and the shredder will catch and fire up. I can use it at will as long as it stays running, once it stops I have to repeat the process.

The optics are OK!
There is a small electromagnetic sensor on the cuttershaft which senses the input load.
I could be maladjusted or defective.

How to oil shredder staples spl-1506x?

You can buy commercial products, or run some wax paper through your machine periodically. The wax will not gum up like oil and attract dirt.

Overload light stays on

Most likely the cutters are still stuffed with paper shreds and needs to be dismantled and cleaned

Spl-1506x shredder only runs in reverse

Daniel:

Unplug the shredder... Take the top off and turn it upside down. Use a screwdriver to take the lower cowling off and look at the motor. If the mounting area where the motor sits looks melted at all, the machine is toast. If the motor mounting area looks good, look at the slot where the paper is inserted... there should be a sensor (that "sees" the paper when you insert it) at the paper slot. Check to see that the sensor isn't damaged.

My shredder overload light comes on immediately with only one sheet of paper inserted and it won't go.

Try running the machine in reverse and putting some shredder oil onto the cutting blades to loosen things up. Then try running the machine in the forward direction but hold the paper in the eyes but dont let it go into the shredding blades...see if it runs forward.!
If it will do this then slowly try paper 1 sheet at a time..but put some shredder oil onto the sheets of paper you are shredding.
If the overload light still comes on without even letting you shred 1 sheet of paper then you likely have another problem...maybe the motor or pcb..you can contact Royal at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance.

The blades are stuck in reverse

I have the exact same problem. In fact, my SPL-1506X is sitting disassembled on the kitchen table as I write this. There is a PC Board inside the unit with a relay that directs the motor to run in forward or reverse. My relay is fused in the reverse position. I know this because the relay's casing is clear polycarbonate. If that relay can be replaced, the SPL-1506X will be fixed, I'm convinced. Unfortunately, the relay is made in China. So much for quality! I located the part no. on the web: Sanyou SME-2110DP a DPDT relay. If you can find it(which I can't), you're in luck. Myself, I'm going to trash the unit.

Well, despite the manufacters warning label I choose to take the shredder apart and found that one of the plastic gears was broken. Hence the motor runs, but the blades do not turn. The thing I didn't understand, the there are metal gears and plasic gears...I can only imagine that the plastic gears at one point or another are going to give. I would suggest not to void the manufacters warrenty, take the shredder back, and get one that is built a little stronger. Hope that helps.

Staples SPL-1506X Shredder Issue

I had the same problem. I have a solution but I do not recommend this unless you have technical experience with repairing electrical appliances. I took the back cover of the main shredder unit to expose the wiring (there are 7 screws in total). The bin full sensor has a blue, green, and red connected to it. I clipped the blue wire to defeat the Bin Full error. You can look through the plastic window to check that the bin is full.
