Remove the vent from the rear of the dryer.
With no laundry in the dryer set it for high heat timed cycle.
After 10-15 minutes of run time measure the temperature at the exhaust vent.
It should cycle between 130 and 165 degrees.
If so you have an obstruction in your outside vent.

Sounds like either the heating element or limit switches are going out on you

Ge dryer way too hot. I have cleaned all the lint out but still way too hot. unplugged vent hose and ran machine still too hot. Took apart machine and tested continuity of heating element and its fine....

I do not know your definition of "way too hot". Remove the exhaust vent and insert a accurate thermometer in the dryer exhaust. Run the dryer on high heat. The temperature should get up to 165 degrees then cool down to about 125 degrees then back up to 165.
If it goes above 165 and stays there replace the high limit thermostat.
If it cycles correctly it is OK.

sounds like thermostat but there is a safety feature that shut down the heat if it gets too hot, becasuse of a blocked venting within the dryer
