When I try to accelerate, the speedometer doesn't move and the engine sounds out of gear on my 1992 Toyota 4 Runner. If I keep driving it, eventually it will accelerate OK and seems to get back in gear, but speedometer still does not work sometimes. Other times it all works fine.

There is an electronic module called ECT under the dash that controls the transmission ( a small computer), however if you had your vehicle serviced in the recent past the wiring connector (a 3 Pin connector) under the Drivers side (LHD) just before the T/case could have become loose or the wires broken, check this connector out.

throttle position sensor .. this lets the computer know just where your foot is on the gas .. It gets worn out in that position because that is where it is used the most. I would check it first then go from there... they are priced reasonable .. always start with the least expensive first then go from there. thanks Jerry holler if you need more

There are usually two to three transmission sensors on most vehicles
sounds like it may have gotten damaged possibly hitting something in the road. You could take it to Autozone they may be able to help you locate the bad sensor. Or call them.

I've got exactly the same problem in '93 Camry w/5SFE automatic w/248,000mi. Transmission shop I trust told me ****** was gone. Another mechanic said the same. I'll drive it 'til the forward gears stop working. Forward L,2,D work great, except downshifting doesn't slow the car at all, although the engine goes to idle.
Let me know if there is any easy fix! Already did a fluid & filter change. . . .results no change. Thanks, cc
