HP designjet 430, the data and media light come on at power up
After turning on the unit the data and media light come on. I can press a button and get the ready light to come on. If I try to load the roll paper it goes fine untill it trimes the sheet. Then it backout the paper and the media light flashes. I cleanded a lage amout of ink off the sensor on the carrage assembly. The service manual suggest replacing the carrage assembly after checking the trailing cable. HP support suggested the system board.

The sad part unfortunatly is that the sensor on the carrage is below minimum specification. The only solution is to change the carrage as a unit P/N C4713-60039 and its going to be expensive. Normally the carrage belt would be replaced at the same time.

on this machine ( v old) if the drive belt has chewed then the plotter will not even come to ready instead it makes a few clunks and flashes lights - If this accurately describes your error then you will need the drive belt replacing, however this machine is now so old that getting hold of new unused parts is nothing short of a miracle Good luck with that one!
You can try Print-Quality Plot test to diagnose the problem. Load paper, when ready light up, then press Form Feed and Media Source keys together. After print is done, unload paper.
This plot consists six tests. The third one is Vertical Line Straightness (VLS) test. You can read the HP 430 Service Manual page 6-7, 6-8 and 6-9. These articles will tell you how to correect the problem.
Hi, This is the problem with the sensor. It tries to read the size of the paper, the sensor is on the side of the carriage assy(cartridges are installed on this assy). You can try cleaning this sensor or get it replaced or some times the service center will replace the carriage unit as a whole.
When you load the paper, the carriage edge detector measures exactly where the right edge of the paper is located. Then the paper is rolled forward and the edge is measured again. If there is a difference in the measurements, the printer assumes the paper is not loaded squarely and rejects the paper. After you load the paper and the printer asks you to align the paper, take your time, release the paper with the release lever, and line up the right edge of the paper with the right edge of the paper roll. You might have to do it more than once to get it to load. Some plotters are very sensitive and others are more forgiving.
I have some bad news for you. The media sensor is faulty. This sensor is not sold seperatly. The entire pen carrage (head) has to be replaced at quite a cost.
Your part number from an HP parts supplier is C4713-60039
Its strange that is a refurbished machine with a faulty carrage. Maybee you can claim under a warrenty
