The top of the agitator is no longer connected to the bottom. I have had the agitator completely out and I can't find ant connection between the top and bottom. I have been using the washer but I cannot wash with the tub completely full because the top of the agitator wont move. I need a diagram of the agitator so that I can find waht hasd broken and replace it.

Top of agerator does,t move bottom does

there are little plastic things in there called "dogs". they get warn, so then they no longer catch and move the agitator. you can buy them at an appliance store or online. Just ask for agitator dogs.

Wash is not agitating properly. Top portion of agitator does not spin and the clothes do not roll over well. Does seem to have a lower unit noise when agitating. Any ideas? thank you, Jeff

inside the agitator there is a set of 4 gears that make the top part of the agitator go back and forth pull off the top and remove the nut inside pull on the very bottom of the complete part then take the top part of the agitator apart from the bottom the install the new new gears by replacing the old ones reassemble and it will work properly

Series 80 Agitator top dosent work

If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.

I assume that your model number starts with a 110 instead of 100.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.26842692

Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

See the part "Dog, agitator "

Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Following is an illustrated description of the above.

I have an old hotpoint washing machine that no longer agitates but spins

if it is 20+ years old the spline inside the top of the agitator is likely stripped. it can be replaced or you can get a complete new agitator for around $50. great old machines. if you take off the cap at the top of the agitator and there is no bolt, then you can just pull the agitator off. it will likely be hard to remove, stuck with built up soap scum. use a leather belt under the bottom and pull straight up and keep you chin out of the way.

Agitator: bottom moves, top does not

If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.

On the Sears parts site:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.26902691&pop=flush

replace the 110.26902691 with your model number (lift the lid and the model number should be printed on the cabinet) and look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

This is what they look like:

pd_26_110_80040?$pddetailsth$ #21 on diagram Dog, agitator (4) Number:3366877Substitution:80040 $9.25Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Kenmore elite won't agitate properly

Does the bottom of your agitator work correctly? We had the same problem if you pop the cap off the top of your agitator there is a cam in there with 3 dogs that engage the agitator causing it to spin. If the bottom part is agitating correctly then chances are the dogs in the cam assembly are shot. If the bottom is agitating correctly then it is very possible you have something stuck under the bottom section of the agitator. If this is the case remove the top cover (same as before it's just a lid that pops off) inside you will see a 1/2" square use a 1/2" drive ratchet with a 3" or 6" extension unscrew this piece remove the top section of the agitator then the bottom. Once the bottom is out check to make sure all is clear inside the washer. Reassemble in the reverse order making sure the lower section sits all the way down on the splines for the drive mechanism. If neither one of those solve the problem I would suspect you have an issue in the drive train of the washer.

Top agitator doesnot work

Your agitator dogs are worn out. They are 4 small pieces in the agitator that act as one way clutches. They allow the top section to turn one way but catch the other way. Pretty simple fix.
If you will post the complete model number I will find the part numbers for you and try to provide instructions on replacing them.
