I had the very same issue with the nvidia audio drivers after a re-install (coincidentaly, also after a re-install of Windows because of the thoroughly EVIL Win32: Vitro virus). Here's what to do:

Find out what on-board sound chip the motherboard uses (usually a Realtek chip on Nvidia based boards), then just download the Realtek version of the drivers for that particular chip/card instead of the bloated and useless drivers that Nvidia uses. Worked a treat for me.....the sound was back the moment I re-booted.

I reloaded window XP on my Dell E521 desktop and now i HAVE NO SOUND

You'll need to download and install the appropriate audio driver from the 5 different choices listed here Product Support
Choose the driver for your particular original product. A Dell E521 had several audio systems. I would look in Device Manager of Control Panel and see if your audio system is named or is just listed as an unknown device with a YELLOW BANG (!) beside it. Try each one starting with newest. If it isn't for your system, it will likely advise you during the execution of the downloaded choice. If so, cancel installation and try the next one.

Virut variety Win32 virus

Some viruses are still busy at work even though you have done a clean install. Formatting just removes the ability for windows to read the files. Always best when you have nasties like that to use www.dban.org and wipe 1st then do a new install.  It does make a diffrence!!

Windows XP wont read DVDS and resolution sucks.

You will need to restore the original software installation. If your warranty is still in effect you will want to contact Dell for service, this is the best possible opportunity for a complete recovery and a happier outlook

Original xp

Hi Vostro owner.Dont worry, this can be sorted.Sound issue is not because u installed windows from a Non-dell cd.But i would ask to call up dell because they will provide u the XP disc that should have come with the system or even it is lost from you. Also then we can download the driver from support site : www.support.dell.com and install it.It is just a mere coincidence now.But the reason i'm asking to get cd from Dell is so that u can avoid any future problems with installing XP from a non-dell cd

During startup at the Dell Screen hold down the CTRL key and tap F11 twice

It may display the Dell Recovery from which you can set your computer back to factory settings

Computer had virus, reinstalled, and now drivers dont work

Sounds like you need to re-load the device drivers for the display and modem. Dell maintains a very good library in their download secton for all the models that they made. Then use device manager to re-load the driver..
