Question about IBM ThinkPad R51 Notebook

R51 Thinkpad Monitor Problems

I have a 2003 or 2004 R51 Thinkpad. My monitor has started cutting out where I can see the screen for a couple seconds and then black. The power is still on and I can kind of see the activity on the screen, but it's pretty much blacked out. It's like my screen is burned out or something. Is there anything I can do? Can I get a replacement "bulb" for lack of a better word? Thanks, Morgan

not sure if I have an inverter problem or just a backlight bulb issue.
Since I can "see" the very very dim image on the screen if I look hard, and since the VGA plug works fine to drive an external monitor... I am suspicious that all I need is the replacement bulb--- a ten dollar item.
Question is.... can this be done by me? And is there a cookbook out there I could follow? And who is the best vendor to use to order said replacement bulb?

To answer your question Morgan, yes you can get a new LCD display for your laptop! Typically people sell the entire assembly which is the screen, backlight, display cable. It then fits into the thin plastic casing around your current screen. They are actually pretty easy to replace the problem is you oftentimes have to remove the computers keyboard, and other pieces of plastic on the top that might be in the way. Also there are usually anchoring screws on the bottom that have to be removed as well. There should be one little teeny tiny cable you have to pull out that connects to the mainboard, and then reconnect with the new display. Try this website if you want to order a new one their price is only $120 (which is great for a new LCD screen).

I have a dotted line of one pixel missed as green color in my lenovo thinkpad R51 monitor. how to correct it

I have that same thinkpad, and recently have problems with the monitor. What I have experience, which may not be the same for you, is that the machine, which I got second hand, has landed on it's left rear corner, and that seems to be where the video stream is emanating from. I still have trouble, as this is a laptop that isn't being supported as it used to be, so when my color is messed up, I have to press down on that area of the keyboard, just above the USB ports, and it fixes it. I usually have to keep this pushed down while I adjust the screen as well. If you need a better fix, it's most likely something you will have to bring to someone to repair.
Best luck, rate and comment please, thank you

I have a R51 that when it boots up it only shows a white to gray shade screen

If it is at all possible, connect an external monitor to the computer. All laptops should have a port for an external monitor. If the external monitor works then you screen is most likely bad and needs to be replaced. If the external monitor does not work then your motherboard is probably bad.

Sounds like the lcd is toast.

Hook the laptop up to an external monitor and see if you get normal video. If you do, chances are it's the lcd. You'll have to replace it.

Blank Screen

First, confirm that it is the screen itself. Connect the video output to a known working monitor and then power on your Thinkpad. if the known working monitor behaves the same way you can rule out the laptop's monitor as the source of the problem. This may be the BGA, Ball Grid Assembly, leadless soldering problem related to video chips on the motherboard, but first test the monitors.

R51 2887 NQ2 Thinkpad (not under warranty) not powering on. The problem appeared 3 months ago for the first time, but going through some forums, the problem got temporarily solved by removing the...

First, the simple things need to be checked. Is the power supply line, from the wall socket to the computer input socket, in good condition. Best test is to try it on a known working Thinkpad or with a multimeter if one is handy.
Second, connect to an outside monitor to rule out faulty laptop monitor. If the known working monitor paired with the R51 works perfectly then you know it is your screen.
Third, does moving or flexing the computer by its base when running exacerbate the problem?

That will get some preliminary data.
