Laptops often do not have a dedicated CMOS battery, but use a hardwired device which you have to unsolder and solder back.
You don't want to do that without some decent experience.
There are two basic kinds of passwords that will be prompted for by the
IBM BIOS, computer and HDD. (You can tell the difference by the icon
prompt).
If this is a HDD password, there are no options for recovery in
the US. Federal laws prohibit possession of the software to access the
secure portion of the disk. The computer passwords are also not able to
be cleared locally.
The unit can be sent to an IBM's maintenance and
support center and they will either
clear the PW or in some cases replace the planar. If you just purchased
the laptop, contact the previous owner for the passwords. If not, then
sending it in for maintenance is your best bet.

Hi.
Please follow the steps to create the recovery discs using the HP Recovery Manager.
Click Start>AllPrograms>Recovery Manager.
Select Recovery Manager. This will open Recovery Manager.
Click Advanced Options. If you are using a laptopand operating on battery power alone you must connect to anAC power outlet before you can go to the next step.
Select Recovery disc creation. Click Next. The Recovery Manager will begin creating the necessaryfiles. This may take a while, so be patient until the bar has reached 100%.
Read the table of requirements thatappears. Depending on the type of discs you use, more or less may beneeded; if you use ordinary CDs, Recovery Manager will require more compared tofewer discs if DVDs are used.
Insert your first blank disc, havingmade sure it is fully labeled, such as "Recovery Disc 01" or"Recovery Disc 1 of 2". The optical drive of your computerwill have automatically opened. If not, open manually. Close the optical driveand click Next.
Understand and confirm you want to gothrough with the operation using the type of disc you have inserted by clickingNext.
Wait while Recovery Manager now createsthe first disc. This may take 20-40 minutes as it collects the files, writes the files and verifies the files to disc.
Remove the disc and insert the nextafter the first has been finished after clicking Next. Continue the creation of discs according to thenecessary requirements, up until the last has finished creating files.
Click Next after removing the disc and then Finish to complete the session. Congratulations! You havejust made yourself a set of recovery discs.
Use the recovery discs to recover yourcomputer in case of system instability or failure.
Thanks!!!!!

Power the laptop off. Unplug it. Remove the battery. Turn it over. Open the bottom panels. Look for a small battery. Unplug this battery. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. RE-Assemble everything. Turn it back on - hopefully it has cleared the settings and you will be prompted to enter the BIOS.
