There is no solution other than getting HP to replace the computer. There have been numerous complaints on the internet about this problem. Seems the NVidia video card is bad and is intigrated into HP's motherboard. If they replace the motherboard the same problem will appear again later. This is a hugh problem for HP who doesn't want to deal with it. Contact the BBB or your state"s attorney general to file complaints. You will get nothing but BS from HP. This needs to be a grass roots effort to get this company to admit to and take responsibilty for this problem. Otherwise the consumer takes another one in the shorts, again.

Check the video card and the memory. REmove the screws in the back and make sure that they are seated properly.

IBM ThinkPad R40 Intel Centrino Upgrade to Intel Core 2 Duo?

According to system specs your system is not compatible with the Core 2 Duo or Centrino Core 2 Duo. To upgrade to those chips you would need to replace the motherboard with one capable of running those chips. If you decided to do that you would almost surely need new RAM as newer boards use newer technology. By the time you did this the upgrade would not be cost effective. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

HP Pavilion DV2000 running very slowly

Yes! I would not recommend anything below 2GB at minimum. I have one laptop with 2GB and one with 3GB: they both open programs and browse the internet very quickly. Even with just two programs open (Internet Explorer and Outlook 2007) it uses 1.1GB of memory.

Definitely upgrade your memory. I recommend this site:
http://www.4allmemory.com/

Just pick your model and they recommend the memory to pruchase. TIP: order with next day shipping - it's only $10. The free shipping takes 14 days. So unless you're patient (I'm not) the $10 many be worth it.
