Question about IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 Notebook

USB still on despite Thinkpad going to standby

I am facing a peculiar problem.

I have a Thinkpad T40 which has been recently installed with a fresh copy of Win XP Pro. I have set the appropriate power properties on the laptop to go to standby when the lid is closed. This works fine. However, the cooling fan which is connected to the USB is still running even after the laptop goes to standby. This is true when the laptop is connected to AC power or when on battery.

I am experiencing this only after the recent XP pro install.

How can this be possible? How is the USB still getting the power to operate the cooling fan despite going on standby. Please assist.

I have a thinkpad t40 every i put a usb allways hang what should i do?

Hi,
Two possible reasons why your PC always hangs after you connect the usb drive,
  • The usb drive contains viruses which are blocked by your PC's antivirus from entering the machine.Run a full scan of the usb drive with an updated anti-virus.
  • There are no installed drivers for the usb drive.Install the drives drivers.

Hope this helps.Thanks!

IBM ThinkPad T40: the problem is the following Modem HSP56 MR( Intel) doesnot work, Other devices:Nework Controller and unknown device doesn't work

Windows is missing the "device-drivers" for your network adapter and your modem.

On a different computer, access IBM's ThinkPad web-site, and download those device-drivers for your T40. Copy the device-drivers to either a CD-writable or to a USB memory-stick.

Move the media to your T40, and install from that removable media.

My IBM thinkpad turns off when i insert my usb internet connection into the usb slot and then wont turn on for a day or 2. What could this be?

It sounds like some sort of power drain or short on the motherboard. I recently made a repair job on a T41,casing on an IBM thinkpad T40 AND T41`S are very week.
My advice to you would be reinstall windows and see if it does it again,If it doesn`t then you will know for sure that it had something to do with windows.IF it still does after a clean installation of windows then its clearly a hardware fault.
*Hardware fault could be you`re power supply not giving enough juice(unlikely) *Motherboard faulty/Or Shorting somewere. If thats the case then a refurbished motherboard would do the trick.

ThinkPad T40

If you can make the problem come and go by slightly twisting or flexing the bottom (keyboard) section of the case, you may have a loose internal connector. If the laptop has been dropped recently, more probably you have a cracked land pattern on the motherboard.
