CAT-5 is rated to 100M with 24 gauge wire
CAT-6 and CAT6e is rated to 550M with 23 gauge wire

But as a note .. Cat 6 really has not been been approved and has no definitive specs yet .. Use Cat5e

Color code for wiring plugin

I'd like to help you. Can you clarify? What 'wiring plugin' are we talking about? Presumably, you're trying to plug a wire of some kind into something. There are different color codes for almost every different kind of cable; without knowing which one you are asking about, your question is impossible to answer.

What wire are we talking about? What is this wire meant to connect to (on BOTH ends)?

This is just a guess, but since this is in the 'router' section, you may be asking about network cables. I've attached an image showing the wiring diagram for both normal and crossover cables:

When I plug a cable into port 8 it will shutdown the switch

Your router supports a total of 8 connections. However, on the back there are 9 physical ports. Port 8 has two physical connectors where one (we will call it port 8a) is used to connect to a PC and the other (we will call that port 8b) is used as an uplink port. The uplink port (8b) cannot be used if something is pluged into 8a. If you are trying to use all 9 physical ports that is likely ther problem. If you need more than 8 devices connected to your switch get another 8 port switch (any brand will do) and connect the two switches via the UPLINK port with a 7 foot CAT-5 cable. Do not use a CAT-5 patch cable less then 7 feet long to connect two network devices together such as computer to switch or switch to switch as that will probably cause another problem with timing.

Another possibility is that the device at the end of port 8 has a malfunctioning network adapter. Try connecting a laptop to port 8a using a 7' CAT-5 cable. You may also want to try pluging the problem cable into another port as a way to test if the problem is somewhere along the cable run.

Telephone cable from wall to modem..Cat 5 cable from modem to Router...You will have to also get another Cat 5 cable for initial set up an hook it from the router to your PC..That is so you can get into the Router software and set your settings, such as network name and encryption. Difrence of lan wan

The Lan limit on unshielded twisted pair cable (UTP) is 300 ft for a local area network (lan). The cable uses the 802.3 Of course if fiber is used in a LAN then this # can be extended substantially.

Now the main difference between the LAN and Wide Area Network (WAN) is that LANs typically have 1 brodacast domain and froward packets at data link (layer 2 of the OSI) level using MAC addresses.

The WAN operates at the network level (layer 3 of the OSI). WANs are and reads IP addresses. Routers can extend far distances (as you said 40-60km) and band with depends on distance. the further away, the more attenuation on the line.

I hope this helps.
