My hard drive was working fine, but one day when i plugged it in, the light goes on but it just doesnt load and read on my computer. Is there anything i could do so i don't loose everything saved on it?
Ok here is your solution on ALL of these external mybooks by Western
Digital... If you are getting a device not recognised, and can't get to
your disk in any other way what has happened is it's generic power and
usb card that is connected to the hard drive inside it's plastic box
has gone out. These western digital essential edition drives which look
sealed actually have some tabs on the shiny plastic case about 1 inch
in from the front on the bottom. Just put the tip of a streight
screwdriver into the cooling slots. Gently pull up and back on the
screwdriver bending the slotted area by the outer **** shaped cover 1
inch from the rounded front. Pull up and towards the back. Once you
have both sides of the bottom front released, then try to gently pry
the bottom center up above the side of the ****. Because there are 4
tabs (2 on each side) that extend down from the main housing with the
cooler holes that just rest in a track that is in the inside of the
outer shiny **** shell. Then repeat for the top of the drive unit.
After a little work you can remove it sliding it all out of the back.
Once the outer shell is off, you can pull the drive out with the SATA
to power and USB card connected to the drive. There is a metal housing
over this card. Remove the 2 screws on the top of the metal housing of
the usb&power. Once removed the bad card can be slid down of the
drive. You can then just plug the drive in in any SATA port with SATA
power inside your computer. Or just buy an external drive housing from
tigerdirect or newegg for $20 which will make any sata drive to an USB
External. What can I say, Western Digital has crappy cards. I only
found this out by my having 2 My Books. 1 worked, and one fowled.. So I
took them both apart. Better than loosing my data seeing how they were
my backup drives...

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.
If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.
Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.
I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.
Ok, this just happened to me, my western digital my book studio external drive was not booting up, i could hear the disk spinning, but it would then cut out and the light on the drive was never turning on. i called Western Digital customer support and found out that the proper way to connect a drive is to plug in the power cable FIRST then the data cable. Also, with the My Book Studio Edition you should never have to press the power button, the drive just turns on when you plug it in. Hope this helps somebody...
It sounds like the adapter more than the e-book.
If the adapter plugs into the e-book, remove it and buy another one with the same voltage and correct power orientation. The best way to do this is to take the old adapter with you to any shop that sells electrical equipment - even K-mart has them.
If it's one of the fixed adapters, it's best just to take it to a sparky and have them change the adapter for you, it's a 2 minute job.
I have been using this hard disk for about 6 months now. It stopped
working. The power and the usb cable are connected. I use Windows Xp
and it doesnt read it. And for some reason most of the time when i open
'my computer' and the hard disk usb cable is plugged in 'my computer'
stops responding !! However the 'safely remove disk' icon comes on the
task bar and i can remove it from there. But i cant read it from
explorer. The light on the HD keeps blinking. It reads my friends HD
and flash drive. Please help me.
