Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your described problem indicates a blown fuse inside the DVD/VCR combo. Exact location would depend on the model and regional version. What is common to all is that it would be immediately after the power cord as it enters the combo unit.

Some ideas to further guide you if the fuse is glass tube type:

  • if the break of the fusible wire is clean, then it would be relatively safe to simply replace;
  • if however, the glass tube is darkened with burnt marks, then there would be some other components defective such as the regulator transistor and/or filter capacitor.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Does not appear from the owners manual that this unit can do that. Very few units have that ability.

Afraid not! ... You need a Recordable DVD player to record TV programs....
The Samsung v4600 is just a DVD player, with no recording capabilities.

DVD VCR combo has no power

I found out what the issue was with my Samsung DVD-V5500. It was the rectifier diode on the 15V tap of the high frequency transformer. This is the same issue that someone else with a later model V5600 had talked about. The diode had shorted and behaved like a piece of wire.

Seems to be a bit of weak point in the power supply. The issue can be diagnosed by using a multimeter to measure the resistance between the diode cathode and ground. If the meter is measuring 1 Ohm between the cathode and ground, your diode needs replacing. I just replaced it with a UF4003 diode from Jaycar, which is basically an Ultra Fast 200V 1A diode suitable for switching the high frequency (20-30kHz) output from the transformer.

The diode is located at the rear right hand corner of the board on the output of the power supply section. A picture below shows the new diode between orientated east-west between the large capacitors. The original diode that failed was an SHG2D SHS.

Doesn't power ON

If you have no indication of power at all,(no lights,no display)the fuse is the first component to check but the vcr has be unplug from the wall when you remove the top cover and remove the fuse to check it.Be carefu.
