I used to have the same router but upgraded to the wireless N model. What I didn't like about this router is you could enable security from a button on the router itself. Frankly, either you use security...or not. This on/off feature is for the birds.

I use macaddress filtering and don't like WEP. There were a few times that I accidentally or inadvertently enabled WEP at the router. Not desirable....and it also would lock out many of the administrative features on the intranet page.

I would reset the router. Go to your local router IP at:

How do you enable security for linksys wireless routers

  1. Type "http://192.168.1.1" into your Internet browser, and press "Enter."
  2. When login page opens up, type the username and password for your wireless router.Depending on your router brand, you may have "admin" and "password" as the respective default username and password. But again, you must refer to your wireless router support manual.
  3. Once logged in, click "Wireless Security" and Select "WEP" as the security encryption type
  4. Set the default transmit key to "1".
  5. Type in a passphrase and click "Generate". This generates random passkeys.
  6. Note down your network's SSID (listed on the security page) and the first WEP key. This is the information that you will need when trying to allow new connection through the wireless network.

If you don't know the password, then you need to reset the router,
Hold it down the reset button with the help of a pen point and power cycle your router. Then re-do the configuration following the manufacturer's instructions. Then you can set password for your router.satheeshd_0.jpg

How do I put an encryption on my linksys router?

Securing your wireless network is a simple process, which generally does not require a lot of time. This can be done by:
  • Enabling WEP or WPA on the Router
  • Enabling Wireless MAC filter on the Router
  • Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router
NOTE: The wireless security modes available may vary depending on the model of the router and wireless adapter you are using.
Enabling WEP on the Router
Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP) is a type of wirelesssecurity which does not change. It provides comparable confidentialityto a traditional wired network. There are two types of WEP you canchoose from:
a. WEP 64-bit: This type of WEP consists of 10-hexadecimal codes. To enable WEP 64-bit, click here.
b. WEP 128-bit:This type of WEP consists of 26-hexadecimal codes hence it is moresecured compared to WEP 64-bit. To enable WEP 128-bit, click here.
Enabling WPA on the Router
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a type of wireless securitywhich is dynamic in nature. Meaning, it changes depending on the timerenewal you will specify. Hence, WPA is more secured compared to WEP.
  • Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (WPA-TKIP) – utilizes a stronger encryption method and incorporates Message Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers.
  • Advanced Encryption System (WPA-AES) – utilizes a symmetric 128-bit block data encryption
To enable WPA, click here.
Enabling Wireless MAC Filter on the Router
Wireless access can be filtered using the MAC address of thewireless devices transmitting within your network’s radius. You caneither permit or prevent specific wireless computers access to yourwireless network.
To permit wireless computers to connect to your wireless network, click here.
To prevent wireless computers to connect to your wireless network, click here.
Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router
Disabling the SSID broadcast is one way of securing your wirelessnetwork. This procedure will prevent other users from detecting yourSSID, or your wireless network name, when they attempt to viewavailable wireless networks in your area. For instructions, click here.

How do I make my connection secure to the internet? I have linksys wireless-G 2.4 GHz broadband router. The router is all hooked up but I believe the current connection is unsecured.

When you connected, did it ask you for a password? If not then it's obviously unsecured. Here's how to fix that... i have the same router.
On XP... open internet explorer... in the address bar, type in: 192.168.1.1

On vista.... click start menu...click on network...right click on router and select properties. Next, click on the "Network Device" tab at top of the new window. You will then see "Device Webpage"... click on the ip address to the right of that underlined in blue. It should ask you for a password... if you haven't set one manually the user is admin and the password is also admin. I recommend changing that to a manual password ASAP. Ok, after logging in, now you have the router's set up page in your web browser.
To make it secure:
On the set up page you now have open... you have a few selections that act like tabs: Setup, Wireless, Security, Access Restrictions, etc... Click on Wireless. After clicking on that, you have some tabs underneath wireless you can click on now.
Those selections should be: Basic wireless settings, Wireless security, Wireless MAC Filter, etc... Click on Wireless Security. There you should see disabled on the first drop down. Pick a WEP, WPA or whatever you prefer. I personnally use WEP with 64bit 10 hex and for the password, i use a 10 digit number.
After you have set up your password and security, click save settings at the bottom. After it's done processing the save, you can close the web browser. You are good to go now.
By the way, I recommended changing your password to access the router's set up page. Make absolutely sure you save that username/password in a safe location. If you forget it, there is nothing linksys can do to help you. I know from experience unfortunately.
Hope all this helped... Good Luck

I am not able to get on to the internet with my wireless laptop

In you web browser, type in 192.168.0.1. If that doesn't work, try 192.168.1.1. If none of these work, it is your router that is the problem and you need to contact Linksys directly. A dialogue box will appear asking for a username and password. Leave the username field blank and type in admin for the password. You will reach the linksys configuration page. Scroll down untill you see Local IP Address. Change it to 192.168.2.1. Scroll down and select save settings. Relogin back to the webpage. Click the tab that says wireless. Make sure the wireless broadcast option is enabled. If it isn't, enable it and click save settings. Click the subtab that says Wireless Security. Change the first option to WPA Shared Key. Changed the second option to TKIP. Next, type in a password you are sure you will never forget. Write it down if necessary. Once completed, hit save settings. You should now be able to set up the wireless connection on the laptop successfully. If you need help in doing that also, please comment back.
