GE Superadio III AM/FM

Medium WaveDX'ing

By Melissa - usenet poster

Anybody using the GE Super Radio III for medium wave DX'ing? I'm looking
for a good portable to take with me when I travel.

Hi there. You posted:

Its a fairly good portable radio with excellent audio, but not exactly a
"DX Machine". Some casual DX-ing is possible with it, especially when
used in a passive medium wave loop, but its simple analog readout can
make it difficult to log an identify stations. For the price, its OK
(if less than $40), but there are other portables and hand held radios
which will beat it easily. If I were you (and wanted something small),
I might consider a Sony ICF-SW7600GR. With headphones, its sound is
nearly as good as the SRIII, and its performance is noticably better
(but then again, the cost is a lot higher ~ $200). Good luck.

I've heard mixed reports about this radio. Some love it, some hate it.
They seem to have had some quality problems, be sure to buy it from someone
with a good return policy.

If you can afford some more $$, take a look at the Grundig YB400PE.
(roughly $150) It's the radio I use for travel - works pretty well. Also
has shortwave, though that's usually a lost cause in a motel room!

If you can find a SuperRadio II, go for it. Bruce Elving *might* still have
some, try # .

It's sort of big. The very tiny Sangean DT200V (not 300) is pretty good
on MW, though not up to MW DXing standards.

The alternative CCrane MW radio is both big and heavy.

Try any old MW radio with a MW loop instead. The Radio Shack MW loop ($30)
is hollow like the Terk version, and so you can pack it efficiently.
Select-a-tenna is filled in and so less efficient for packing.

I always take the Radio Shack loop. Add YB400/DX398/ATS909/GR7600 to that
and you're set. I went thru 3 Super Radios but they all had quality problems
and I
finally quit trying to find a good one.
