your belt is of the guide arm try replacing the belt usually located @ the head of the vacum there should be 4-6 screws holding the head on remove it in well ventilated area try putting on mask cause you will release all the dust from the head when you take it apart you will see the belt around the brush remove the brush and bearings togther then replace belt if you know your model # of your vacum u can usually find replacement parts online or @ most sears and walmart outlets.
First of all Clean out the vacum cleaner . Empty canister and take filter outside and hit on something to get all dust out . Now wash canister and filter with vinegar water and let dry before using vacum again. You might try using carpet fresh for pet odors on carpet and empty and clean canister and filter regularly.
