You are totally right. Pretend play doesn't need a big spending spree to make it fun. Kids just love using household items for their games. It makes them feel big and grown up. Here are some examples;

Boxes ie cardboard

Dressing up clothes - old shoes, hats and scarves

Blankets and bottles

Kitchen equipment

Sewing machines come with a range of features and range from basic to very fancy. If you are a beginner and on a tight budget, it's better to buy a basic machine (you can machines with as little as 6 stitches). Especially if you want the machine for dress making, repairs etc rather than crafting and quilting that require more feature. You can always upgrade it at a later date.

I have seen some clever ways on you- tube to make unusual shapes fit into the hoop, using clips etc. You can also buy sticky stabliser so the hoop holds the items without it being in the hoop. I'm sure you can also get devices to help you embroider hats, but i'm not sure they will fit the 9000. try an internet search for more information and possible devices
