Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To your concern, yes. Depending on your model/version, either a:
side/rear slide or front panel button switch (older versions);
part of the settings/configuration in the MENU features/options.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

It should, I found a user guide here:

http://images.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/2007/5400/v3421438_en.pdf

I didn't see anything that mentioned pulse dialing, but perhaps setting it up for PBX would work.

Here are the steps:

Setting up to fax while behind a PBX
If the printer is being used in a business or office, it may be connected to a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) telephone
system. Ordinarily, when dialing a fax number, the printer waits to recognize the dial tone and then dials the fax
number. However, this method of dialing may not work if the PBX telephone system uses a dial tone that is not
recognizable to most fax machines. The “Dialing while behind a PBX” feature enables the printer to dial the fax number
without waiting to recognize the dial tone.
1 From the control panel, press Fax Mode.
2 Press .
3 Press or repeatedly until Fax Setup appears.
4 Press .
5 Press or repeatedly until Dialing and Sending appears.
6 Press .
7 Press or repeatedly until Dial Method appears.
8 Press .
9 Press or repeatedly until Behind PBX appears.
10 Press to save this setting.

It's on page 79.

Let me know if this works.

Please see the link to see how to connect the pulsed phone line with 5400 using a RJ 11 adapter--

Also, see the manual for detailed procedure--

And if you are still unable to connect with the pulse line then you have to use a billing tone filter (Lexmark part number 14B5109) to be installed on pulsed line.

I need to connect my phone line to my printer to enable me to send faxes, how do I do this.

Refer to the printer's User's Guide on how to connect your Lexmark X5470 to your telephone line for faxing. If the printer software is already installed on your computer, you can access the printer's User's Guide by going to the Start menu -> Programs -> Lexmark 5400 Series -> User's Guide (applicable to Windows OS). If not, you can download it from the Lexmark website for free using this link: Lexmark 5400 Series All-In-One User's Guide. Scroll to page 12 for the fax setup instructions. Also, check page 71for faxing instructions (sending, receiving, etc.). Hope this helps.
If you need additional assistance, please contact Lexmark technical support. Thanks.

Problems sending and receiving faxes.

  1. Open Lexmak Productiviti studio - 5600 - 6000 Series ( icon on Desktop)
  2. Open Setup and manage faxes link ( left bottom corner)
  3. On Ringing and Answering card look at the Manual Answer Code ( if some nuber inside delete it, it should be blank)
  4. On Dialing and sending card look at the Dial method (if you have a tone phone select Touch - tone, and if you have pulse phone select Pulse)
The diference betwen Touche Tone and Pulse is that Tone when you press nuber hear tone (like on cell phone), and Pulse when you dial nuber hear serie of short pulses (like when you dial nuber 5 you hear 5 short pulses like tttttt)

Lemark 5400 can't faxor rec fax give phon lone error message

If u have DSL modem ..u need to have a splitter for the fone line.....and then....the connections need to be right...

Phone line to splitter -splitter to Fax mech(Line Jack)...

Problem Receiving--
Make sure ur answering Mech rings are set more than the fax mech...i.e (if ur answering mech is set to 3 then fax mech should be set to 4)....
If u r using DRPD(distingtive ring pattern i.e If u have one line and two numbers.....) then set double ring for fax and single for Phone or answering mech....or vice versa...

Yes you need to connect to computer to receive and send fax........ Telephone as to connected to dial up modem of the computer if you dont have dial up modem then the faxing wont work.........

About Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection (DRPD)
"Distinctive Ring" is a service provided by some telephone service providers. Two phone numbers are assigned to one phone line so that you will hear different ring patterns for incoming phone calls than for incoming faxes. If you subscribe to this service, follow the instructions below to program your All-In-One to use it.
On the X125:
Press Setup once, then press Menu nine (9) times until DRPD appears on the display.
On the X63:
  1. Press Setup once, then press Menu eight (8) times until DRPD appears on the display.
  2. Press Options until you see Learn, and then press Start/Yes.
  3. Dial the phone number that you want to use as a fax number. (Do this from a different phone line, not from the line the fax will be installed on.)
  4. Press Setup.
  5. Press Menu until you see Fax Receive Mode on the display.
  6. Press Options until you see DRPD, and then press Start/Yes. The All-In-One detects the ring pattern and answers all incoming faxes on the second ring.
