Question about Seagate Momentus 5400.3 Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a seagate momentus 5400.3 160gb drive installed in a Thinkpad t60 laptop. It was working fine until after I had put it in hibernation, and subsequently tried to get back in (approximately 2 hours passed between the first action and the second). When I tried to get in, the system went to a blue screen stating that there was (I think), an unrecognized boot volume error. I have now put the drive in an external USB drive. Although explorer can identify the drive, when I try to look at the contents of the drive, the system states "the request cannot be performed because of an I/O device error". Is there a way to get access to the data?

Configuring the BIOS
After completing the drive installation, restart your computer. Your computer
may automatically detect your new drive. If your computer does not
automatically detect your new drive, follow the steps below.
1. Restart your computer. While the computer restarts, run the system
setup program (sometimes called BIOS or CMOS setup). This is usually
done by pressing a special key, such as DELETE, ESC, or F1 during
the startup process.
2. Within the system setup program, instruct the system to auto detect
your new drive.
3. Save the settings and exit the setup program.
When your computer restarts, it should recognize your new drive.
That should work ya long haired hippie. give me a shout this weekend, M.Y. (puff puff pass *****!)

Added a ST95005620AS in Lenovo (2503) docking station as a second drive and it is causing a slow boot in Lenovo T60

Very strange, I added a WD 500GB in place of my CD drive in my R60 and have had no issues. I suggest the following:

1. Pull the Seagate drive from the docking station, does the laptop boot faster (confirm the added drive is really the problem).

2. Put the drive caddy back in with a drive with one of another brand other than the Seagate, see if the performance imorives (confirm its the Seagate which is the problem and not the caddy or docking station).

If performance increases in both cases, do some research on compatibility issues between the IBM and Seagate drives. I would also go to Lenovo's website and update the laptop BIOS... this can easily be accomplished by downloading a tool and doing it through Windows. I had issues with using a non-Lenovo battery with my R60 till I updated the BIOS. Good luck, let me know if you get to the bottom of this. Please rate me if this helps you. Thanks.

No, the disk doesn't appears in My Computer because the file system on it is completely corrupted - all the data is lost. To see if the hard disk itself is recoverable download, install and run this free program (select the correct disk for testing)

Hi There. I am looking for an Internal Hard Drive to suit a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop. Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160Gb ST9160821AS. Where can I get one or is there another Hard Drive that would be OK to use...

I suggest you check the specification of your Dell laptop to see the maximum size hard drive it can support. The maximum size hard disk you can install in the laptop depends upon the BIOS.
Any major brand of 2 1/2" hard drive will work with the Dell.

I have a Thinkpad t60. For the past few days it won't go into hiberation when I close the lid. It just stays on and consumes the battery.

I have seen this issue before with my T60. It seemed to be related to not having restarted my laptop in a while. I used to use hibernate rather than shutting down my laptop for weeks at a time. Actually restarting my laptop seemed to get hibernate to work again.

In addition, you can check to see if for some reason the hibernate option has been disabled.

In Win XP (Win 7 is very similar):
  1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Power Options.
  3. On the Hibernate Tab, ensure Enable hibernation is selected (check mark).
  4. On the Advanced Tab, ensure that the setting for When I close the Lid is set to Hibernate (select it from the drop-down list if necessary). There should be an option for when plugged in and when on battery. Set both to your preference.
Hope this helps. Thanks for using FixYa.com

It came with a 7200RPM 160GB SeaGate Momentus (ST9160823AS) SATA. As long as the hard drive is an SATA drive it will work on your system. The drive has the details on it.
